#4 West Texas A&M Battle #9 Eastern New Mexico in Lone Star Opener at The Pitch

CANYON, Texas - The #4 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M kick off Lone Star Conference action on Thursday night as they take on and host #9 Eastern New Mexico starting at 7 p.m. at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas.  This is the Buffs first match against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. 

 

EASTERN NEW MEXICO

Eastern New Mexico registered a 6-0-0 overall record after defeating Montana State-Billings in a 3-0 shutout to jump to No. 9 in the national rankings and No. 2 in the South Central Rankings behind WT.  

 

As a team, the Greyhounds have recorded 12 goals and have allowed only two in their first six games of action. 

 

Junior Charlie Hackshall leads the Greyhounds with a team-best of six points with one goal and four assists, logging 426 minutes for ENMU.  Junior midfielder Gabriel Peres and sophomore forward Joe Conwayhave also contributed for the Hounds both totaling two goals for four points each. 

 

Junior goalkeeper Ross Dalton holds five wins (three shutouts) for Eastern New Mexico with 25 saves (.926), allowing only two goals on 57 shots.  The Liverpool, England, native has logged 546:37 minutes this season for the Greyhounds. 

 

ENMU is coached by second season head coach Jon Fridal who has directed the Hounds to a 14-8-2 overall record.  The Western Illinois alum helped the Greyhounds place third in the Heartland Conference West Division and eighth overall in the conference standings last season.

 

THE SERIES

Thursday's match will mark the 31st time the two teams have met on the pitch, with WT leading the series 20-7-3 with the matchup starting back in October of 2004. 

 

THE LAST MEETING

Last season the Buffs defeated the Greyhounds 3-1 in their last meeting to earn the second seed in the conference tournament where they went on to earn their first Heartland Conference title against Midwestern State.  

 

COACH LAUFFER

Butch Lauffer enters his 29th season as the head men's soccer coach at West Texas A&M University.  Lauffer is the longest tenured coach in WTAMU history in an acclaimed career starting in 1991.  The Texas Christian alum led the Buffs to 17 victories last season for one of the best seasons in program history, setting a new record for most wins in a single season. With the Buffs, Lauffer has recorded a 336-137-37 record with the Buffs and a 526-214-54 overall record at WT.

 

LAST TIME OUT  

The Buffs hold a 3-0 overall record after they earned their third-consecutive win with a 3-0 shutout against Seattle Pacific for their second home victory this season.  

 

WT opened the game in the 35th minute when Marius Longeanie found Stefan Andjelic for his second goal of the season to lead the Falcons 1-0 at the half.  Jean-Luc Ramdin doubled the score in the 70th minute while Francesco D'Aulerio recorded WT's final goal with a header goal from a corner kick by Jorge Callejas.  

 

LSC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Alexander Vencel picked up his second victory of the season and first shutout, totaling four saves on 12 shots (four on goal).

 

STANDING NATIONALLY

WT moved up one spot to No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top-25 Poll released on Tuesday, breaking their highest national-standing since 2013 at No. 5.  The Buffs are the highest ranked team in the conference ahead of No. 9 Eastern New Mexico and No. 19 Midwestern State.  

 

BUFF LEADERS

Sophomore midfielder Kenny Brown and junior midfielder Stefan Andjelic lead the Buffs with a team-best four points each.  Anjelic and Brown both have totaled two goals and six shots on frames.

 

Jean Luc-Ramdin and Francesco D'Aulerio have also added to the Buffs offense, each scoring in WT's 3-0 shutout against Seattle Pacific.
