Yearego Becomes WT’s Saves Leader as the #16 Buffs Take Two from Tarleton

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M started out their Lone Star Conference weekend series with the Tarleton Texans on a high-note as the #16 Buffs ran their win streak to seven games with a pair of victories at Wilder Park in Canyon. WT senior Dominic Yearego became the program's all-time saves leader in the opener.
 
The Buffs and Texans finish off their weekend Lone Star Conference series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch of a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.

GAME ONE RECAP:
The Texans got on the board early as Hunter Thomas crushed a three-run bomb to straight away center field with two outs for the early 3-0 lead, the Buffs cut into the lead in the home half as they took advantage of a pair of TSU errors including one with two outs to score a pair and cut the lead to 3-2. 
 
The Buffs loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second before Keone Givens tied the game with an RBI single to right center followed by a Tanner Schuetz sac fly to the warning track in left at 4-3. Thomas struck again in the top of the fourth inning as the junior lifted a solo shot to left center for his second homer of the afternoon to tie the game at 4-4.
 
WT responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as Justice Nakagawa singled down the left field line followed by a pair of wild pitches and a Givens RBI groundout, the Buffs weren't done yet as Clay Koelzer lifted a solo shot the other way to left field to run the lead to 6-4. WT added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Koelzer lifted a sac fly to right field with the bases loaded to make it 7-4.
 
Joe Corbett picked up the win (9-0) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing four runs on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in his six innings of work. Yearego became the program's all-time saves leader (21) as the senior struck out two and forced a flyout to left to end the contest.
 
GAME TWO RECAP:
The Buffs jumped out early as Nick Guaragna singled to center field with the bases loaded and two outs for the quick 2-0 lead, WT added to their lead in the second as Schuetz singled to left to score Nakagawa followed later in the frame by a Kyle Kaufman single to left to score a pair and run the lead to 5-0.
 
The Texans registered their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Zach Mesa singled up the middle to leadoff the frame, Darin Cook responded as the senior right-hander stranded a pair of Texans with his seventh strikeout of the night to leave the score at 5-0. TSU broke up the shutout in the seventh as Mesa picked up his second hit of the night, an RBI single up the middle to make it 5-1.
 
TSU wouldn't go down without a fight as they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth as Austin Gehle entered from the bullpen for the Buffs, the senior did his job as the Frisco native registered a pair of strikeouts followed by a grounder to second to strand the bases loaded. WT loaded the bases with no outs in the home half followed later in the inning by a TSU throwing error that plated two followed by a Kaufman RBI single to right center to make it 8-1.
 
Cook picked up the win (6-2) for the Buffs, allowing one run on two hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Gehle picked up his first save in Maroon & White, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts in the final two frames.
