Cook’s No-No in the Nightcap Finishes a Saturday Sweep of Adams State

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Darin Cook dominated on Saturday night as the senior right-hander tossed his first career no-hitter as the #10 Buffaloes stayed unbeaten with a pair of wins over the visiting Grizzlies of Adams State at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
 
The Buffs and Grizzlies conclude their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the finale scheduled for 12 p.m. at Wilder Park.

HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 1):
The Grizzlies got on the board early as Logan Bistrup tripled to the right center field gap with one out to score Jake Angelopulos from first followed later in the inning by a Nico Nintze RBI single to center to make it 2-0. The Buffs responded in the home half of the second as Justice Nakagawa drove in a pair with a two-out single thru the left side followed by a Keone Givens three-run bomb over the scoreboard in left for the 5-2 lead.
 
Adams wouldn't go down without a fight as the used an RBI double down the left field line by Orlando Romero with one out in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3 followed by a bloop double down the left field line to score a pair and tie the game at 5-5. Givens singled to short to leadoff the bottom of the ninth followed by a Christian Loya walk, the pair stole to move them both into scoring position before Clay Koelzer ended the game with a single thru the left side for the 6-5 walkoff win.
 
Dominic Yearego picked up the win (1-0) for the Buffs, allowing one run (earned) on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts in his 3.2 innings of relief. Drew Mesecher started the game for WT, allowing four earned runs on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work.
 
HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 2):
The nightcap saw a pitcher's duel early as WT's Darin Cook and ASU's Daniel Brennen threw up zeroes in the first three frames, Loya registered the game's first hit with a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Kaufman singled with two outs before Jaxxon Fagg doubled down the right field line to drive in a pair, WT scored another on a Grizzlie error followed by a Jake Pederson RBI single to center to make it 4-0.
 
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Loya singled thru the left side with one out to score Nakagawa from second base while knocking Brennen from the game, Connor Flynn entered and Kaufman welcomed him with a two RBI double down the left field line to make it 7-0. WT wasn't done yet as Justin Martinez crushed a two-run bomb to left center followed by a Nick Guaragna RBI triple to right center to make it 10-0, Reese Patterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 11-0.
 
Guaragna singled down the left field line with two outs in the sixth to score Cade Engle from second base to extend the lead to 12-0. The night belonged to Cook as the senior capped off his first career no-hitter with two more strikeouts in the seventh to run his game total to 10 with just two walks on 80 total pitches.
