CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M host St. Edward's on Saturday, Oct. 19, for their first meeting in over six years. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at The Pitch in Canyon.
A LOOK AT THE LADY BUFFS
West Texas A&M returned to the win column on Thursday evening with an impressive 4-1 victory over Angelo State. The Lady Buffs scored three times in the opening 25 minutes to hand the Rambelles their first Lone Star Conference loss of the season.
Shanelle Arjoon opened the scoring in the 6th minute on her first goal of the season. The senior timed her run from the midfield perfectly before beating the keeper.
Hannah Kelley-Lusk would double the advantage in the 23rd minute after
Calista Cordero's shot went over the crossbar. The junior was in the right place at the right time for her fifth of the season.
Kelley-Lusk would score her second, WT's third a minute later on a right footed to the far post. She controlled Cordero's long ball down the right side before blasting the ball across the goal to make it 3-0.
The Rambelles would get a goal back in the 40th minute on Gabby Villagrand's header.
Khaline Jacob would restore the three goal for the Lady Buffs in the 71st minute. The senior poked the ball past the keeper after
Samantha Silvestre flicked
Emily Avila's free kick into the penalty area.
A LOOK AT ST. EDWARD'S
St. Edward's enters Saturday's showdown 7-4-1 overall and 6-0-1 in LSC play. The Hilltoppers remained unbeaten in conference play with a 2-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night in Portales, N.M.
The Hilltoppers are scoring 2.25 goals per game led by Eli Chavez, Sarah Preston and Reagan Dykes. Preston has scored a team-high five goals on 20 shots, 11 of those on-target. Dykes and Chavez have chipped in four goals of their own with Chavez also dishing out a team-high four assists.
Abigail Sweeney, the LSC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, has started in all 12 games this season where she ranks first in the conference in the goals against average (.641). The Spring, Texas native has recorded 41 saves for a .854 save percentage including two shutouts.
Nick Cowell is in his 14th season with the Hilltoppers where he has won a program-best 205 games. He was hired as the fourth head coach of SEU women's soccer in 2006 where he has won 10 or more games in 13 straight seasons including back-to-back 18-win season in 2012 and 2013.
THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs leads the all-time series 5-3-1 with the last three meetings ending in ties. They won five of the first six meetings by a combined score of 10-2 including a 4-0 victory in their first-ever game on Sept. 10, 2000 in Canyon.
The two teams last met on Sept. 20, 2013 at ENMU Soccer Field in Portales, N.M. where they played to a 0-0 draw. Dominic Premac,
Jessie Thomas and Jasmine Shultz recorded a team-high two shots while
Yvette Bedoy made three saves.
GOALS GALORE
The Lady Buffs needed 11 shots to score a season-high four gals against ASU on Thursday. The three first half goals where their most since putting five past UT Permian Basin on Oct. 5, 2018.
The four goals were also the most scored at The Pitch by the Lady Buffs since Oct. 5, 206 in a 4-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico. WT also defeated Southern Nazarene 5-1 during the same season where Marlene van Mouirk and
Ronni Ajeto each scored two goals.
PRETTY IMPRESSIVE RECORD
Since joining the team in 2017 from the University of New Mexico, Kelley-Lusk has scored in 16 games where the Lady Buffs are 15-0-1. A 2-2 draw against ASU on Sept. 29, WT has won 15 straight games where the All-American has found the back of the net.
NEEDING TO STRIKE EARLY
With their win over the Rambelles, the Lady Buffs improved to 5-1-0 in 2019 when scoring the first goal. They are 25-1-2 since October 2017 when opening the scoring.
RECORD WATCH
Cheyenne Orozco enters Saturday's contest eight minutes shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to play over 5,000 minutes. The Albuquerque, N.M. product has played and started in all nine games this season where she ranks fifth on the team in minutes played, 810.
Kelley-Lusk picked up her ninth career game-winner on Thursday, leaving her one short of becoming the fifth player in program history to score 10 career game-winners. The Farmington, N.M. native is also one goal short of tying Jessica Rodriguez (2000-02) for the 10th in career goals scored.
Khaline Jacob will make her 50th career appearance on Saturday making her the seventh player on the roster to have played in 50 or more games.
5 WINS AWAY FROM THE CENTURY MARK
With their 4-1 victory of Angelo State on Thursday night, 10th year head coach
Chad Webb improved to 95-74-20. The former WT standout is six wins away becoming the second coach in program history to reach the 100-win plateau. The Lubbock, Texas native has led WT to four consecutive 10-plus win seasons including back-to-back NCAA appearances.
