No. 14 Buffs Dominate Tarleton State in Nightcap of Twin Bill, 14-3 for Doubleheader Sweep

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Following the thrilling final inning in the opener, the No. 14 West Texas A&M baseball team picked up where it left off, plating seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 14-3 victory over visiting Tarleton State Saturday evening in the second game of a doubleheader.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Seniors Bodie Bryan and Luis Amaro continued where they left off the first game as Bryan singled to begin the nightcap and Amaro singled to right, plating Bryan for a 1-0 lead with one out.
  • Sophomore Darius Carter began the bottom of the second with double down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.A dropped foul put freshman Tyler Williams on base and senior Nelson Paredes doubled home two for a 3-0 lead.The second error of the inning on catcher's interference and a walk loaded the bases.Amaro was plunked by a pitch, scoring the third run of the inning, and a 4-0 lead. Junior Henry Hausman singled home the fifth run of the game.
  • Another walk plated the fifth run of the inning and sixth of the game as Carter, who began the inning, came back up the plate, who singled home the sixth run of the inning off the wall as he narrowly missed a grand slam.WT scored six runs in the inning for a 7-0 lead.
  • Two walks by WT junior starter Zach Dixon put two on for the Texans in the top of the third with one out, as Blake Adams hits a three-run home run to left.
  • Two more walks with two out in the top of the fourth brought a mound visit for the Buffs.
  • Freshman Tommy Williams hit a sacrifice fly to right for an 8-3 lead and a wild pitch made the score 9-3.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, a double from senior Jimmy Cubillos and a pair of wild pitches plated Cubillos for a 10-3 lead.Following a pitching chance, a walk and a balk plated two more runs for a 12-3 lead.
  • WT added two more runs in the sixth for the 14-3 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT belted 11 hits with the 14 runs, along with no errors, while Tarleton State had three runs on three hits with three errors.
  • Four different Buffs collected two hits each as Canas was 2 for 4 with three RBI and one run scored, while Carter went 2 for 3 with a RBI and two runs scored.
  • Dixon improved to 1-1 on the year in four innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, walked four and fanned five.
  • Junior Braden Baker shut down the Texans in the final three innings for his second save of the season as he walked two and fanned six.
  • Kurt Johnson went three innings for the Texans, allowing eight hits, seven runs – five earned, walked two and fanned five.
  • Adams went 1 for 3 with three RBI on the home run and one run scored for Tarleton State.
