Buffs Sweep Twin Bill Saturday, 13-1 and 4-3

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M, 13-4, Eastern New Mexico 1-3
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 21-7, 3-0 LSC, Eastern New Mexico 14-9, 0-3 LSC
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: Behind three home runs on the day by senior Luis Amaro, the West Texas A&M baseball team swept a doubleheader from Eastern New Mexico Saturday at Wilder Park, 13-1 and 4-3 as the team improved to 21-7 and 3-0 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE):
 
  • The Buffs took an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff walk, a bunt single from senior Jimmy Cubillos and a sacrifice fly from junior Christian Loya in the bottom of the first.
  • A leadoff ground-rule double from junior Tag Baxter and a RIB single from junior Nick Guaragna pushed the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • Later in the frame, the Buffs loaded the bases with a walk as what could have been an inning ending double play, turned into two more runs as Cubillos reached on a fielder's choice and an error plated two runs, followed by a two-run blast from senior Luis Amaro for a 6-0 lead.Senior Nick Canas belted a RBI triple for a 7-0 lead, while Guaragna singled to right for a RBI and an 8-0 lead and freshman Tommy Williams choked up on the bat and went the other way through the right side for a RBI single, chasing ENMU starter Keenan Dodd from the game and a 9-0 lead.
  • A throwing error plated the first run of the game for the Greyhounds as a double began the top of the fourth and the run scored on a ground out error.
  • The Greyhounds strung together a couple of hits, putting runners on the corners following the run, but were unable to get anything else.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Buffs loaded the bases and junior Blake Weaver hit a bases-clearing double for a 12-1 score.
  • WT added a run in the sixth for a 13-1 lead for the final scoring in the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME ONE):
 
  • The Buffs belted 13 runs on 13 hits with two errors, while ENMU had one run on nine hits with one error.
  • Guaragna went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Weaver went 2 of 3 with three RBI to lead the Buffs.
  • WT senior pitcher Ryan Larison went six innings, allowing seven hits, one unearned run, walked two and fanned five improving to 4-0 on the year.
  • Junior Drew Mesecher pitched the final inning, allowing two hits.
  • ENMU pitcher Keenan Dodd took the loss in 1.2 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs – three earned, walked three and fanned one as he fell to 3-2.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO):
 
  • Three hits for the Greyhounds in the top of the first led to a 1-0 lead for ENMU, but an out at third and a caught stealing got the Buffs out of the inning.
  • Chris Padilla began the top of the second with a solo home run to left for a 2-0 lead.
  • Amaro belted his second home run of the day for a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the fourth.Two singles followed as the Buffs had two on with two away, but were unable to get the equalizer.
  • An error on a fly ball to right field scored a run and prolonged the fifth inning for the Greyhounds and a 3-1 lead. A second error put runners at first and second and the Buffs got out of the jam with a throw to third for an out on an attempted steal.
  • Amaro came up huge again for the Buffs with his second home run of the game and third of the day for a 3-3 score in the bottom of the fifth.
  • A walk and infield single put two on for the Buffs with one out in the bottom of the sixth and an error loaded the bases.A sacrifice fly from junior Justice Nakagawa plated the go ahead run by the Buffs as ENMU made a move to the bullpen.
  • WT junior Dominic Yearego closed the game in the seventh for his third save of the year with one strikeout.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME TWO):
 
  • WT had four runs on seven hits with two errors, while ENMU had three runs on six hits with one error.
  • Amaro went 3 for 3 with two runs scored, two home runs and three RBI to lead the team.
  • Junior Darin Cook (5-1) took the win in six innings, allowing six hits, three runs – two earned, walked one and fanned four.
  • ENMU pitcher Enrique Perez (2-2) took the loss in 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs – three earned, walked one and fanned four.
