#15 Lady Buffs Sweep Their Weekend Series at Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – West Texas A&M continued their offensive explosion on Saturday afternoon as they scored 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Western New Mexico Mustangs as the #15 Lady Buffs swept the weekend series at Mustang Field in Silver City, New Mexico.

The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they take on the Cougars of Colorado Christian in a single game with first pitch set for 2 p.m. CT followed by a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Colorado State-Pueblo. WT was originally scheduled to take on Regis in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader but an RMAC weekend series schedule change for the Rangers forced the cancellation of the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 1):
The Lady Buffs wasted little time taking the lead as Ashley Hardin ledoff the game with a homerun for the second straight day followed later in the inning by a Suka Van Gurp long ball for the 2-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Kourtney Coveney drove in Alyx Cordell who tripled earlier in the frame at 3-1, the Lady Buffs broke the game open in the top of the fourth with seven runs highlighted by another Van Gurp bomb to make it 10-2.

The Mustangs wouldn't go down without a fight as they took advantage of errors by the Lady Buffs to plate eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 14-12, WT responded in the top of the sixth as Hardin singled to left field to drive in Amy Reynolds to make it 15-12. WNMU cut into the lead again in the home half of the sixth inning with a two-run single with two outs to cut the lead to 15-14.

Stevie McLemore added to the Lady Buff lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run single with the bases loaded to extend the WT lead to 17-14, that's all that the Lady Buffs would need as McLemore closed out the last frame for the win and the LSC weekend series sweep.

Coveney picked up the win in the circle (1-0) for the Lady Buffs while McLemore registered her first career save.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
The two teams traded zeroes in the first three innings before McLemore continued her big weekend with the sophomore's fifth homerun of the series, a three-run bomb down the left field line for the 3-0 lead. The Mustangs responded in the home half of the sixth with an RBI groundout to the circle to cut the lead to 3-1.

McLemore went the distance in the circle as the Phoenix native moved to 2-1 on the season, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in the complete game win.
