CANYON, Texas – The #13 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M started off the day with an impressive offensive showing as they run-ruled Southwestern Oklahoma State before falling behind early to Western Oregon to split Day 1 action at the WTAMU Invitational at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas.
Saturday's games of the WT Invitational have been cancelled due to inclement weather and Sunday's games will be re-evaluate on Saturday afternoon once a clearer forecast is available. HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
WT wasted little time starting off the scoring as
Suka Van Gurp singled to left to start the game followed by a SWOSU error to put Lady Buffs on first and second with no outs, Miranda Grover forced a fly ball to center followed by a
Kylee Moore single to left to load the bases.
Allie Smith and
Shayne Starkey drove in runs with singles followed by a
Stevie McLemore sac fly to right for the 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second followed by an infield single for their first run of the game, a sac fly to right plated another run before
Kilee Halbert responded with a pair of outs highlighted by her third strikeout of the game.
WT immediately responded in the home half of the second as
Kourtney Coveney launched a three-run bomb to right field followed two batters later by
Kylee Moore's fourth long ball of the season to run the WT lead to 8-2.
Shanna McBroom led off the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line followed by an
Alyx Cordell standup triple to right to extend the lead to 9-2, Van Gurp welcomed a new SWOSU arm with an RBI double to left followed two batters later by a Moore RBI groundout to run the lead to 11-2.
Halbert picked up the win (3-0) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the complete game victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
The Wolves started off the scoring in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs on three hits to go along with a Lady Buff error for the 2-0 lead, Western Oregon added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to center field by Cheyanne Rimer followed by an infield single to make it 4-0 and knock McLemore from the circle.
Shayne Starkey entered the game and forced a lineout to short before a two-run single to right ran the Wolves lead to 7-0.
The Lady Buffs loaded the bases with no outs in the home half of the fifth to knock Maddie McClelland from the circle,
Ashley Hardin singled to center field to put the Lady Buffs on the board but Haley Fabian forced a pair of strikeouts and a popup in foul territory to end the threat at 7-1.
WT wouldn't go down without a fight as Coveney tripled to the deepest part of the park to drive in
Kinzie Jones with no outs followed by a Hardin RBI single off of the left field wall to make it 7-3,
Hailey Ward drove in a run with an RBI groundout but a fly ball to left center gave the Wolves a 7-4 victory.
McLemore picked up the loss (1-1) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits with one walk and two strikeout in her 3.1 innings of work. Starkey was impressive as the junior left hander allowed just four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in the final 3.2 innings of play.
