CANYON, Texas – The No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team closes out the 2017-18 home slate hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State this week for Senior Weekend and Hall of Champions Weekend. WT battles Texas A&M-Kingsville Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the First United Bank Center and then hosts Angelo State Saturday at 4 p.m.
INSIDE THE RECORDS – WT has won a current league-best six-game winning streak and could match its longest winning streak of the season with a pair of wins this weekend. The Buffs are 22-2 overall and 12-2 in Lone Star Conference play, sitting tied atop the league standings with UT Permian Basin. Texas A&M-Kingsville is 11-13 overall and 4-10 in conference play. The Javelinas are sitting just outside the top eight, who will advance to the LSC Championship, Mar 1-4 in Frisco, Texas, at Dr Pepper Arena. Angelo State is 17-7 and 8-6 in league play and will play at UT Permian Basin on Thursday, before heading to Canyon for Saturday's matchup.
WITH TWO WEEKS REMAINING - The Buffs and Falcons lead the league standings with a 3.5 game lead on Tarleton State, who defeated Texas A&M-Commerce Tuesday evening. With the win by TSU, the Texans are 11-5 in league play with two games left against UTPB and WT next week, while TAMUC is 10-6 with two games left also against WT and UTPB. With two wins this week, the Buffs can seal up no worse than the No. 2 seed in the upcoming LSC Championship. Angelo State sits fifth at 8-6, followed by Eastern New Mexico at 5-9, while Cameron and Midwestern State each are 5-10. TAMUK is a half a game behind CU and MSU for eighth, while Western New Mexico is 1-13. The top eight teams in the final standings after the completion of the regular season advance to the conference tournament this year at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas, Mar. 2-4.

SENIOR WEEKEND - This weekend will mark the final regular season home games for four WT senior who each have put their stamp on the Buffs and helped lead the team back on the regional and national map. The 2017-18 senior class has an overall playing record of 86-33 and a conference record of 40-20, along with the program's first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1997-98. WT IN THE NABC POLL – WT remained eighth in the NABC Poll this week following its two road wins at Cameron and Midwestern State. For the third-straight week, Lincoln Memorial leads the poll, followed by Queens (N.C.), Ferris State, Western Oregon and West Liberty. Northwest Missouri State remained at six, while Bellarmine remained seventh and WT was eighth. Valdosta State is ninth, followed by Southern Nazarene at tenth. UT Permian Basin remained 13th, while Fort Lewis sits at 14th, and Arkansas-Fort Smith moved to 19th among other teams in the region.
FIRST NCAA REGION RANKINGS - The Buffs lead the initial NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Central Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA. UT Permian Basin is second in the rankings, followed by Arkansas-Fort Smith, Fort Lewis, Regis, Dallas Baptist, Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State round out the top eight. Tarleton State is ninth, followed by Colorado Mines. There will be two more public rankings each of the next two Wednesday's followed by the NCAA Division II Men's Selection Show on the evening of Mar. 4 on NCAA.com where the 64-team bracket will be unveiled for the NCAA Tournament. Traditionally, the top team in each region in the final ranking on Mar. 4 will host each of the eight regionals.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK – The Buffs opened the final month of the regular season with road wins at Cameron and at Midwestern State. WT needed overtime to dispatch of Cameron, 103-93 as the Buffs outscored the Aggies 19-9 in the extra-session. The Buffs had double-doubles from freshman
Gaige Prim and junior
Ryan Quaid as each scored 16 points and Prim had a career-high 15 rebounds. Senior
David Chavlovich scored a team-high 21 points, while Quaid went 10 of 14 from the line with 12 rebounds. WT outrebounded Cameron 54-33. A total of 20 turnovers by the Buffs kept the Aggies in the game as Cameron held a 22-9 advantage in points off turnovers and outscored WT 43-36 in the second half to force overtime. WT, however, countered with a season-high 37 of 46 from the line. Last season WT needed a school-record four overtimes in a thrilling 100-98 win at Aggie Gym. In the game last week, WT scored the first 12 points of overtime en route to the win. Last Saturday, the Buffs traveled to Midwestern State where they hadn't won in nine tries and just twice since 2005. WT entered at 8-21 all-time in Wichita Falls. Playing without leading scorer
David Chavlovich, the Buffs completely blitzed Midwestern State from start to finish as WT won 87-58 behind 16 triples and 19 of 21 from the line with four players in double figures. Senior

Ryan Quaid added 17 points and missed a double-double by one rebound as did Evans. Quaid tallied a career-high six assists in the game, while junior
Gach Gach added 14 points and sophomore
Drew Evans chipped in 12 off the bench. WT held MSU to just 36.1 percent shooting for the game and had four times as many 3's as the Mustangs, while outrebounding MSU 46-32. The Buffs held a 54-31 lead at halftime and never looked back.
TOUGH AT HOME - This season, the Buffs are 12-1 at home and have won 33 of 34 home games dating back to the 2015-16 season. This year, WT is averaging 92.5 points at home and allowing 73.3, while recording four game of over 100 points and 12 games of scoring over 80 points. The Buffs are shooting .454 at home this season, while holding teams to a .411 clip. WT has drained 164 triples at home (.385) and gone 276 of 373 from the line (.740). The Buffs are averaging 42.4 rebounds per game at home, along with 16.5 assists and 12.6 turnovers. The Buffs have scored 90 or more points in each of the last two home games and seven times overall this season.
MOVING UP THE SEASON CHARTS - Senior
Jordan Evans has buried 96 triples this season as he now is fourth all-time in school history in triples in a season. Senior teammate
David Chavlovich leads the school record book with 112 triples in 2015-16. Evans needs three triples to tie Charles Byrd (1997-98) with 99 and four to tie for second with Fred Rike (1989-90). Evans is sixth in triples attempted in a season with 230. Chavlovich leads the record book with 287 triples attempted in 2015-16.
TOP IN 3's - Both Chavlovich and Evans are the top two career 3-point shooters in school history as Chavlovich has buried 353, while Evans has 271 triples. The duo also leads the record book in 3-point field goals attempted for a career has Chavlovich has attempted 967 triples, while Evans has 271.
PLAYIN' SOME GAMES - Chavlovich has played in 115 games in his storied career at WT. He is just one game shy of tying the school-record set by Kyle Shields (2004-08) with 116 games played. If Chavlovich plays in both games this week, he will break the all-time school-record for games played.
CHAVLOVICH NATIONALLY - Nationally speaking, Chavlovich ranks second in NCAA Division II among current player in career scoring with 2,226 points and fourth overall in all divisions. He is first in D2 in triples made (353), first in 3-pointers attempted (967) and leads all divisions. He is first in D2 and second in all divisions in field goals attempted (1,716). He is second in D2 in 1,500 points and 350 assists with 437 assists.
CHAVLOVICH AND PRIM HONORED - Senior
David Chavlovich and freshman
Gaige Prim were named Lone Star Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, following the thrilling 105-86 win over then No. 8 UT Permian Basin on Jan. 30. It is the second time this season the duo has swept the weekly awards and third time overall for WT.
ABOUT TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE - The Javelinas enter the week looking to snap a five-game losing skid and have won just two of their last 14 games after starting the season 9-1. TAMUK leads the LSC and ranks 14th nationally in blocks at 4.8 per game, while ranking 13th nationally in total blocks with 116. TAMUK is 28th nationally in scoring defense, holding teams to just 68.1 points per game to lead the league. Leading the way for the Javelinas this season is Trey Sumpter who leads the team averaging 11.4 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.2 per game. Sumpter is 96 of 245 from the field (.392), while going a team-best 44 of 134 from beyond the arc (.328) and 38 of 55 from the line (.691). Caelan Neal is second in scoring at 7.9 points as is Derrick Byrd. Neal has 8 made field goals, 25 made triples and is 48 of 62 from the line. He leads the team in assists with 56 and is second in steals with 22. Byrd has 62 made field goals and 15 triples, along with leading the team from the line on 51 of 59 for a .864 clip. He has 47 assists and 13 steals. Robert Stevenson leads the team and the LSC with 42 blocks ranking 29th nationally at 1.91 per game. His 42 blocks is second-best in the league and 33rd nationally. As a team, the Javelinas are shooting .402 from the field, while shooting .285 from beyond the arc and .671 from the line. TAMUK is averaging 35 rebounds per game and scoring 67.7 points per contest. The opposition is shooting .430 against them and .334 from beyond the arc, while going .710 from the line and averaging 36.4 rebounds per game. Head coach Johnny Estelle is in his fourth season at TAMUK and is 49-58 there and 2-7 against WT.
INSIDE THE SERIES WITH TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE - The Buffs lead the all-time series 51-25 and have won the last two, including a 70-69 win in Kingsville on Jan. 13. WT has won 10 of 12 in the series dating back to 2013. The Buffs are 28-5 all-time in Canyon and have won six-straight games there since a 77-73 loss on Feb. 5, 2011.
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE - The Buffs were given all they could handle in the 70-69 win at TAMUK in January as it marked just the first one point margin in series history. The win gave WT its eighth-straight win for the second time this season. WT led by as man as 11 points in the game as battled back from the deficit for a 67-66 lead with 41.9 seconds left as it was the first lead of the game for TAMUK since scoring the first two buckets of the contest. TAMUK led 69-68 as Chavlovich was fouled and scored the bucket with 3.8 seconds left. He missed the free throw as Cris Boleware missed a floater off the front of the iron as time expired and WT escaped with the win. Chavlovich had 20 points to lead WT, while Quaid had 14 points and 10 rebounds. WT held TAMUK to just 33.3 percent shooting and 2 of 16 from beyond the arc, as the Javelinas stayed in the game on 29 of 33 from the line, compared to WT's 16 of 21 from the stripe.
ABOUT ANGELO STATE - The Rams enter the week 17-7 overall and have won four of their last six, but dropped two of their last three. The Rams dropped a 66-59 decision at home to Tarleton State on Saturday the last time out. For the season, the Rams are led by Ja'Michael Brown who leads the team averaging 13.3 points per game. He is 78 of 178 from the field for a .489 average and is 18 of 52 from beyond the arc, while going 61 of 76 from the line (.803). Brown has 90 assists to lead the team and 23 steals. He ranks second in the LSC in both assist/turnover ratio (2.09) and assists per game at a 4.7 clip. Brandon Williams is second in scoring at 11.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 6.5 per contest. Williams is a team-high 114 of 179 from the field for a .637 clip, while going 40 of 53 from the line with a team-high 36 blocks, ranking third in the LSC in blocks per game (1.5). Williams is third in total blocks in the league and eighth in rebounding. James Kirksey is third in scoring at 10.9 points per game and is 100 of 204 from the field (.490). He is second in rebounding at 5.9 per game and second in assists with 81, while leading the team in steals with 39, ranking second in the LSC (1.63). Will Adler leads the team from beyond the arc with 65 triples in 147 attempts (.442). He is third in the league in 3-pointers per game (2.71), first in 3-point field goal percentage (.442) and third in total triples (65). As a team, the Rams are shooting a .478 clip ranking second in the LSC on 713 of 1492. The Rams are 190 of 495 from beyond the arc (.384) which also leads the league. ASU is 388 of 566 from the line (.686) and is averaging 83.5 points per game, ranking third in the league. The Rams are averaging 38.8 rebounds per game, while allowing 73.5 points per game ranking fourth in the league. ASU leads the LSC in turnovers forced per game at 16.25 ,while making second in the LSC in turnover margin at a 2.8 clip. The Rams commit just 13.5 turnovers per game, good for third in the league. Head coach Cinco Boone is in his third year at the helm of the Rams. He is 59-26 overall and 1-4 against WT.
INSIDE THE SERIES WITH ANGELO STATE - WT leads the all-time series with Angelo State 43-25 and has won the last four, including an 81-77 win on Jan. 11, 2018, in San Angelo. The Buffs are 28-6 all-time in Canyon against ASU and have won two-straight at home and six of seven. WT is 15-19 in San Angelo and has won the past two meetings there. The winner in each of the last five games has scored 80 or more points (4-1), while WT has scored 80 or more in each of the last four wins, including three of 90 points or more.
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST ANGELO STATE - Behind a career-high 21 rebounds and 21 points, the Buffs came up BlackJack with an 81-77 win in San Angelo on Jan. 12, 2018. Leading by four at halftime, WT built a 56-47 lead early in the second half, but the Rams wouldn't go away as Adler pulled ASU within 62-61 with 7:38 left. ASU took the lead on a Ram Tut triple for a 68-66 lead, but Chavlovich and the Buffs wouldn't be denied as Chavlovich tied the game at 74 with 90 seconds left ending a long drought for the Buffs. He then hit his first triple of the game for a 79-75 score with 51 seconds left as he was 0 of 11 from beyond the arc to that point. The Rams cut the deficit to two once again, but Chavloivch was fouled and hit both free throws for an 81-77 final margin.
BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK 20 - With the 105-86 win over UT Permian Basin on Jan. 30, the Buffs won their 20th game, marking the third consecutive season of 20 or more wins. WT last won 20 or more games for three seasons or more from 1997-2001 with four-straight 20-plus win campaigns.
THE 22-2 START - WT's 22-2 start matches the best start since the 1997-98 team which began the year 22-2 before a loss to Abilene Christian and finished the season 26-5 under former head coach Rick Cooper en route to the Elite Eight. A win on Thursday would give WT its best start in school history.
CHAVLOVICH FOR 30 - For the third time this season, senior
David Chavlovich scored in the 30s as he was 9 of 22 from the field, 3 of 11 from beyond the arc and 9 of 11 from the line in the 86-82 win over Texas A&M-Commerce Jan. 20. He tallied three rebounds, six assists and one steal in 35 minutes of action. It was the 10th time this season he has led the team in scoring and 63rd overall for his storied career.
QUAID TABBED WEEKLY BEST AGAIN - Junior
Ryan Quaid was named LSC Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season following his ninth and tenth double-doubles in road wins at Angelo State and at Texas A&M-Kingsville (Jan. 11-13). Quaid finished the week averaging 17.5 points, 15.5 rebounds with 31 total rebounds and 21 defensive boards, along with three blocks, and went a team-best 13 of 21 from the line (.619). He was 9 of 12 from the line. He is the only player in the league to earn the honor four times this season.
QUAID TABBED USBWA WEEKLY BEST - Junior
Ryan Quaid was named United States Basketball Writers Association Division II men's basketball National Player of the Week. It is his first weekly honor as USBWA National Player of the Week.
CHAVLOVICH NAMED TO WATCH LIST - Senior
David Chavlovich was named one of 100 student-athletes to the Small College Basketball (SCB) 2018 Bevo Francis Award Top 100 Watch List, announced this week. Chavlovich and UT Permian Basin's Daeshon Francis are the lone representatives from the LSC, while Darrion Strong-Moore of Arkansas-Fort Smith also was named to the watch list from the South Central Region.
BROWN WINS 80 - WT fourth year head coach
Tom Brown won his 80th game at the helm of the Buffs in the thrilling 70-69 victory at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Jan. 13. Brown currently is 86-33 (.718) during his time at WT.
EVANS MOVES INTO TOP FIVE IN SCORING - Senior
Jordan Evans sits fifth all-time in career coring at WT with 1,289 points in 90 games for a 14.3 average per game. He eclipsed the 1,000-point mark earlier this season. He is 117 points from fourth place, occupied by Price Brookfield (1940-42) with 1,406 points.
CHAVLOVICH TOPS ALL-TIME - This season, senior David Chavloivch has taken over the all-time lead in career field goals made (702), field goals attempted (1,716), 3-point field goals made (350), 3-point field goals attempted (967), free throws made (469) and free throws attempted (594).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE - Junior
Ryan Quaid ranks 16th nationally in double-doubles with 12 to lead the LSC. Haywood Highsmith of Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) leads the nation with 21. Quaid has 18 double-doubles for his career. WT freshman
Gaige Prim has seven double-doubles this season in his first year as a Buff. The duo has had double-doubles in the same game twice this season against Midwestern State (1/4/18) and at Cameron (2/8/18).
HIGH SCORING BUFFS - WT is averaging 89.8 points per game ranking sixth nationally and leading the LSC. The Buffs have scored 90 or more points 12 times this season and have scored over 100 points six times. All but four games this season the Buffs have scored 80 or more points. WT is eighth nationally in scoring margin at 15.7 per game to lead the league.
DEADLY FROM DISTANCE - WT is fourth nationally in 3-point field goal attempts (779), while ranking eighth in 3-pointers made (287) and eighth in 3-pointers per game at 12.0 as all lead the LSC. WT is 287 of 779 from beyond the arc this season for a .368 clip ranking third in the LSC. The Buffs are holding teams to just a .329 clip from beyond the arc for second in the LSC and 37th nationally.
CHAVLOVICH AND EVANS FROM DOWNTOWN - Senior
Jordan Evans is third nationally in 3-pointers attempted (230), fourth in 3-pointers made per game (4.00) and third in total triples with 96. Evans is second in the LSC in 3-point field goal percentage at a .417 clip. Senior
David Chavlovich is sixth in the LSC in triples made with 56, fourth in triples attempted (165) and sixth in the league in triples per game at 2.43.
GETTING THE FREEBIES - As a team, the Buffs are tenth nationally in free throw attempts this season (627), third in free throws made (477) and first in the LSC in free throw percentage at a .761 clip for 30th nationally. WT recorded a perfect 10 for 10 in free throws against Tarleton State Jan. 18, marking the second time this season the Buffs have been perfect at the line (9-9 vs. Rollins (12/19). WT went a season-high 37 of 46 from the line (.804) at Cameron last week (2/8/18).
WITH THE ASSIST - The Buffs are 68th nationally in assist/turnover ratio at a 1.22 clip to lead the LSC, while ranking third in the league in assists per game at 15.5. WT is third in the league in total assists with 371 ranking 64th nationally. Senior
David Chavlovich is third in the LSC in assist/turnover ratio at 2.02 and leads the LSC in assists per game at 5.0 for 49th nationally. He is 52nd in the nation in total assists with 115 for second in the LSC.
PROTECTING THE ROCK - WT is second in the LSC in fewest turnovers with 305, while ranking second in the LSC in turnovers per game at 12.7. WT is fifth in the LSC in turnover margin at 1.3.
GLASS CLEANERS - The Buffs are eighth nationally and second in the LSC in defensive rebounds per game at 29.67, while ranking 13th nationally in total rebounds with 1,020 for second in the LSC. WT is sixth nationally in rebounds per game at 42.50 for second in the conference. WT is 34th nationally and leads the LSC in offensive rebounds per game at 12.83. Junior
Ryan Quaid is 20th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (7.42) ranking second in the league, while leading the LSC in offensive rebounds at 3.29 ranking 25th nationally. He is 13th nationally in rebounds per game at 10.7, ranking second in the LSC. Quaid is 12th nationally in total rebounds with 257 for second in the league.
GETTIN' TO THE RIM - The Buffs are fifth in the LSC in field goal percentage at a .448 clip. Junior
Ryan Quaid leads the team at a .622 clip ranking 16th nationally and second in the LSC on 130 of 209. WT is 695-1552 from the field. Quaid's 130 field goals made ranks second on the team behind senior
David Chavlovich with 140. Chavlovich is third in the LSC in made field goals.
LSC RECORDS FALL - Senior
David Chavlovich owns the LSC career records for 3-pointers made (353) and 3-pointers attemped (967). The previous records were 325 triples made from Stephen Hamrick of Eastern New Mexico (1992-96) and 3-pointers attempted (811) also by Hamrick. Chavlovich is 154 points from tying the LSC career scoring record in the LSC of 2,380 points by Nate Granger of Texas A&M-Commerce (East Texas State) from 1973-77. Chavlovich has scored 464 points this season, ranking second in the LSC in total points and 56th nationally. He would need 619 total points this season to break the record for the season as he has scored over 619 points each of the last two seasons.
CHAVLOVICH FOR 40 – Senior
David Chavlovich dropped a career-high 40 points in the 92-88 win over Adams State (11/17). Chavlovich went a career-best 13 of 18 from the field, 6 of 9 from beyond the arc and 8 of 10 from the line. He played in a season-high 35 minutes and his 40 points ties the LSC high this season with Corinthian Ramsey of Tarleton State who had 40 against UC-Colorado Springs. The 40 points by Chavlovich ties former Buff Dale Blaut (2/14/70) for fourth-most all-time in a game by a Buff.
BUFFS SECOND IN LSC PRESEASON POLL – The Buffs were picked runner-up in the preseason Lone Star Conference Poll as voted on by league coaches, sports information directors and select media representatives. UT Permian Basin was picked to win the league, following its LSC tournament championship from a year ago.
CHAVLOVICH PICKS UP PRESEASON HONORS – WT senior
David Chavlovich was named to two preseason all-America publications this season as he was named to the Basketball Times Preseason All-America team and was a second team preseason honoree according to Street & Smith's Magazine. Chavlovich put together one of the best single-seasons in WT basketball history last season as he earned first team all-conference honors, helping WT to its first NCAA Sweet Sixteen since 1997-98 as the team went 26-9. Chavlovich set new single-season school-records in points (655), while holding the WT career mark for points (1,762), field goal attempts (1,367), 3-point field goals made (297) and 3-point field goal attempts (802). He broke the school all-time scoring record at UT Permian Basin on Feb. 4, 2017 and earned NABC Division II South Central Region All-District honors.
LOOKING AHEAD - Following the games this week, the Buffs close out the 2017-18 regular season on the road at Texas A&M-Commerce next Thursday and at Tarleton State a week from Saturday.
BUFFS SIGN ONE IN NOVEMBER - WT signed the services of Mar'Qualen Grant for the 2018-19 season as he inked with the Buffs on National Signing Day. Grant, shot 59 percent from the field and averaged 15.3 points per game for Waxahachie High School, while averaging six rebounds per game, four steals per game and six assists per contest. He was a first team all-district 10-5A selection last season and was named the 2016-17 Newcomer of the Year in District 10-5A. Last season, Grant helped lead his team to a 29-7 record and 14-0 in district play, while finishing the season as the 5A Region 2 semifinalist. He also competed in AAU for head coach Brandon Ray. Grant helped lead his team to the title of the Adidas Gauntlet Tournament in South Carolina. It was the first time a Texas team had won the tournament.
