CANYON, Texas – Fresh off its record-setting week, the West Texas A&M men's soccer team continues on the road at Rogers State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Newman on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Buffs are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Heartland Conference play, while leading the West Division of the league and have won three-straight games.

The Buffs recorded a 2-1 win at Lubbock Christian last Thursday and posted a school-record 13-2 win at UT Permian Basin on Saturday. The record-setting win came as it marked the most goals scored in a match in school-history and third-most in Heartland Conference history, while ranking the most in conference history between two league teams.
In addition, WT tallied two hat tricks in the game for the first time in program history as both senior Rafael Vasconcellos and junior Julio Vagas accomplished the feat. Six different Buffs scored goals in the game and the Buffs tallied 29 points in the game and the two hat tricks marked the eighth and ninth in program history. WT's previous record for goals was 12 against the University of the Southwest on Sept. 2, 2011
Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, junior Callum Challinor, had an outstanding week with a total of three goals and two assists. He had the game winner against LCU on Thursday and two scores at UTPB with two assists. Challinor paced the team with eight shots (.375) and four on frame (.500) in 127 minutes of play. This season, Challinor leads the team with six goals and 14 points, along with two game winners. He ranks third in the conference in total goals with six (39th nationally) and third in goals per game (0.67) which is good for 47th nationally. He is sixth in the league in shots on goal per game at 1.56. His 14 points ranks fifth in the league.
Now is his 27th year of coaching, WT head coach Butch Lauffer won his 500th career game on Saturday in the win at UTPB. Lauffer is 310-143-33 in 27 seasons as the men's coach and he coached the Lady Buffs for 14 years, going 190-69-17. He is 500-210-50 all-time between both programs.
For the season, the Buffs are 21st nationally and second in the conference in assists per game at 2.11, while ranking 23rd nationally and second in the league in total assists with 19. WT leads the conference in corner kicks per game at 6.67, ranking 13th, while ranking third nationally in points per game at 9.22 to lead the league.
The Buffs are third nationally in scoring offense at 3.89, 18th in shots per game at 17.33 and seventh in shots on goal per game at 8.89. WT is third nationally in goals with 32 to also lead the league and sixth nationally in total points with 83.
Individually, Stefan Andjelic is tied with Challinor for game winners with two, while Vargas is fifth in the league in shots per game (3.22) and sixth in shots on goal per game (1.56). He also has three assists ranking tied for third in the league with teammates senior Evan Bozman and Vasconcellos. Vargas is second on the team in goals with five and points with 13.
In goal, the Buffs are led by freshman Alexander Vencel who has started all nine games in goal, playing 792:02 minutes, allowing 11 goals for a 1.25 goals against average with 34 saves (.756) and a 6-3 record with one shutout and faced 83 shots. Graduate Casey Tilley has seen action in one game for 22:07 minutes, allowing one goal and faced one shot.
Rogers State enters with a 5-4-1 record and a 2-2-1 league mark in the North Division. The Hillcats sit second in the division behind league-leading Midwestern State at 6-0. St. Edward's is second in the league in wins with a 5-0-1 mark, while WT is third with its 4-2 league record.
The Hillcats have gone 0-3-1 in the last four games after winning four-straight prior. RSU lost 4-2 to then-No. 11 St. Edward's last week and lost at Dallas Baptist 2-0. During the streak, RSU has scored four goals and allowed nine, after scoring nine and allowing just two in the four-game winning streak.
RSU has 15 goals in 162 shots (.093) for a 1.5 goals per game average, while allowing 14 goals (1.40 gpg ) on 116 shots (.121). RSU is at a .383 clip for shots on goal, while the opposition is at a .422 clip. The Hillcats are averaging 16.2 shots per game and have nine assists with 61 corner kicks on the year.
Individually, Jordan Watson and Jake Simpson lead the team with six points each. Simpson has a team-high three goals, while Watson has two scores and two assists. Simpson has a team-high 27 shots with 11 on frame, while Watson has 22 shots and eight on goal with one game winner. In goal, Cody Gammill has played in nine games with eight starts for 745:10 minutes, allowing 11 goals (1.33 GAA), 32 saves (.744) and a 4-3-1 record with two shutouts and faced 91 shots. Walker Farrar has played in three games with two starts for 188:28 minutes, allowing three goals (1.43 GAA), three saves and a 1-1 record, with one shutout and faced 13 shots.
These are the top two teams in the league in corner kicks as RSU is 31st at 6.10 per game and in shots per game as the Hillcats are second behind WT at 16.20 per game. Jaxon Pitt is fourth in the league in game winners with two, while Simpson is third in shots per game at 3.38.
WT leads the all-time series 1-0 after the two teams met in Canyon last season with the Buffs winning 3-0. In the game, WT scored just 3:29 into the contest as now-junior Michael Garcia put up the game winner. Bozman and now-senior Gabe Williams each had goals, too. WT outshot RSU 22-4 and 12-2 in shots on goal.
Newman enters the week with a 2-6-2 record and a 0-5-1 mark in league play. The Jets host Eastern New Mexico Thursday before WT visits on Saturday. Following five-game losing skid, Newman tied then-No. 11 St. Edward's 1-1 in San Antonio on Saturday. Both teams scored their lone goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation as SEU scored in the 81st minute and Newman came right back in the 84th for a score.
The Jets have scored nine goals on the season on 110 shots (.082) and have 49 shots on goal (.445), while allowing 12 goals on 105 shots (.114) and 44 on frame (.419). The team has eight assists and 58 corner kicks, along with 32 saves in goal. Jamie Barkway leads the team with four goal and two game winners. He has 16 shots with 12 on goal and is 1-3 in penalty kicks. Tommy Fiszel, Ed Jabbari and Jared Rangel each have four points on one goal and two assists a piece. Fiszel leads the team with 24 shots and 10 on goal. Rangel has two scores on four shots.
In goal, the Jets have had Chase Bowman play all 960 minutes, allowing 12 goals (1.13 GAA), with 31 saves (.721) and a 2-6-2 record, along with two shutouts and faced 104 shots.
The Buffs lead the all-time series with Newman 4-0, including a 1-0 win last season in Canyon in a very physical contest which saw a combined 44 fouls, nine yellow cards and two red cards. Former Buff Christian Suthers scored the golden goal in overtime at the 99:35 mark for the winner on a deflected shot off the crossbar. WT is 2-0 in Canyon and 1-0 in Wichita as the last time the teams played in Wichita was on Sept. 24, 2010, with a 2-0 WT victory. The Buffs have outscored Newman 8-1 in the four meetings.
