A Look Back…
The Buffs started the season in fine fashion with a 4-0 thumping of Wayland Baptist. Sophomore
Ivan Ulloa was the Man of the Match after scoring two goals including the match winner in the 23
rd minute.
Reece Schattle made a name for himself is his debut assisting Ulloa on his both of goals. Debutants
Rafael Vasconcellos and
Cameron Walker both put their name on the score sheet for the first time. Vasconcellos added a brace in the 52
nd on a wonderful into the upper 90 while Walker added another just a minute later in the 53th after disposing a WBU defender.
Patrick Satorie made five saves to preserve his 11
th career shutout and 17
th career victory.
WT made a quick trip to Springfield, Mo. to take on Drury on Saturday, Sept. 3 for their first road match of the season. The Panthers made the Buffs pay from the opening whistle scoring the eventual game winner just 48 seconds into the match. WT kept pressuring the Panthers nearly equalizing the match multiple times but were denied by the post on two different occasions. The Buffs best chance came in the 84
th minute on a double dummy from
Jake Wiffen but the senior was unable to get it past the DU goalkeeper.
Ulloa Starts Fast…
It took
Ivan Ulloa one match to equal his scoring total from last year. The Wylie, Texas netted two goals in the Buffs first match of the season against Wayland Baptist to double his career total. The sophomore currently ranks third in career goals and points among active players while tied for the lead in assists (4).
Ulloa also ranks in the top three in the Heartland in goals, points and game-winning goals after the first week of competition.
First Game, First Goal…
Cameron Walker and
Rafael Vasconcellos both made their debuts for WT against Wayland Baptist and scored their first career goals within two minutes of each other. The Buffs were leading 1-0 entering the second half before Vacsoncellos and Walker put the match out of reach for the Pioneers.
Vasconcellos brought the crowd to their feet with his goal in the 52
nd minute. The Rio de Janiero, Brazil native found himself with space 25 yards out from goal and calmly lifted the ball over the outreached hands of the keeper into the upper 90. Walker got his first career goal just a minute later when a WBU defender lost the ball allowing the Humble, Texas native to beat the keeper one-on-one.
Coaches Corner…
Morale of team heading into the second week of the season
"I think the morale is still very high. The Drury travel situation wasn't ideal as we had kids throwing up, stopping to get medicine and players forgetting personal items. I know that we lost but the team played very well and we have had a good week of practice. We have kids out there working out on there during the day in-between classes. I am not concerned about the morale, I know the guys want to get out and get back on the winning track."
Positives from first two matches
"We want to build upon the defensive success that we had during the first match as we didn't concede a goal. I think that we were under more pressure during the first match against Wayland Baptist. Our pressing against Drury was really good as we were able to dictate where they had the ball in their half. Our work effort on defense has been very high during the first two matches."
Thoughts on Huston-Tillotson
"They have a new coach and are still trying to figure things out. They are very unorthodox and that can be scary because you don't know what you are going to get sometimes. Two of their best players didn't play against McMurry and nobody seems to know why but we need to prepare as if they are going to play."
Thoughts on CSU-Pueblo
Pueblo is going a strong, physical team. They are going to be direct and hardworking. They are going to try and outwork you and run you over if they have to. Teams like Pueblo are the reason that we have implemented a high press as we don't want to stop teams from dropping balls on top of us. I don't expect to see anything different from Pueblo than we have seen in the past.
Heartland in the Rankings…
St. Edward's moved up seven spots to No. 7 after beating Colorado Mines 2-0 during a nationally televised game on ESPN3. The Hilltoppers leapfrogged Midwestern State who dropped two spots to ninth after finishing the weekend 1-0-1.SEU also jumped ahead of MSU in the Hero Sports Men's Soccer Rankings moving up two spots to No. 8. The Mustangs dropped nine spots to No. 12.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
712…
That is amount of days between appearances for junior
Gabe Williams after coming on for Chrisitan Suthers in the 37
th minute against WBU. The forward missed more than half of 2014 season after breaking his leg in a match against St. Edwards before missing all of last season due to complications of that broken leg.
1:09…
The time between Rafael Vasconcello's and
Cameron Walker's goals in WT's 4-0 victory over WBU.
23…
The Buffs have not had a losing season in 23 years. The last time a WT men's soccer team finished under .500, "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men was the No. 1 song in America and George H.W. Bush was still President of the United States of America.
291…
Thursday's win against Wayland Baptist marked the 291
st time
Butch Lauffer finished in the win column. The 26
th year head coach enters the weekend nine wins short of becoming the 12
th active Division II men's soccer coach to win over 300 matches in a career.
