Bayer and Hardin Lead #2 West Texas A&M to an LSC Road Sweep at Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The #2 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M became the first team in Division II softball to 40 wins as WT raced past the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in a Lone Star Conference weekend sweep at Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas. The Lady Buffs improve to 40-2 (22-2 LSC) on the season while the Javelinas fall to 15-24 (6-14 LSC) overall.

The Lady Buffs return to the friendly confines of Schaeffer Park next weekend as they host the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico in a four-game Lone Star Conference series on Senior Weekend in Canyon. The series starts on Friday night at 5 p.m. in doubleheader action followed by the final two contests on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Schaeffer Park. WT will look to clinch their third straight Lone Star Conference title next weekend, three wins against the Hounds will give WT atleast a share of the LSC Title and a series sweep will give WT the title outright.

GAME #1
The Javelinas started off the scoring in the home half of the third inning as they capitalized on a WT fielding error with two outs followed by a Roxy Chapa RBI double to the right center field gap to give Kingsville the 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs responded in the top of the fifth inning as Brittany Cruz doubled to left field to score Andrea Sitter and Shayne Starkey followed later in the frame by a Shea Ibrahim fielder's choice to drive in Cruz to go along with a TAMUK error as Stacey Ramirez scored to tie the game at 4-4.

WT took their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the sixth inning as Sitter started the frame with a triple to left field followed by a Starkey RBI groundout to plate the senior at 5-4, the Lady Buffs took advantage of another Javelinas error as Cruz scored from third base with two outs to run the WT lead to 6-4. That would be more than enough of a lead for Kilee Halbert as the sophomore right hander picked up the win (16-1), giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in her 11th complete game of the season.

GAME #2
The Lady Buffs started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as they took advantage of a dropped foul ball by the Javelinas as Ashley Hardin drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded and one out for the 1-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the top of the third as two more TAMUK errors and a Lacey Taylor walk loaded the bases for Hardin again as the sophomore added another RBI with a sac fly to left center for the 2-0 lead.

The WT defense kept the Javelinas off the board in the home half of the third inning as Taylor gunned down an attempted stolen base for the second out of the frame followed by a grounder back to Tori Bayer in the circle as WT took a 2-0 lead into the fourth. Bayer allowed her first hit of the finale in the top of the fourth with one out before the senior responded with a strikeout and popup to end the fourth inning with WT leading 2-0.

The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning as Hardin led off the frame with a solo bomb to left field, that's all the lead the Bayer would need as the senior picked up the win (11-0) as she gave up no runs on one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts to tie a season-high.
