Buffs Fall to St. Mary’s in Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – West Texas A&M men's soccer opened their season on the road against St. Mary's. The Buffs allowed two first half goals and were unable to find a late equalizer as they lost, 2-1.
 
The Rattlers opened the scoring in the 16th minute when freshmen Patricio Botello Faz scored his first collegiate goal. He received a ball from Jack Wolf in the box and bicycled it home. Kieman Akers gave St. Mary's insurance before half time as he redirected a deflection passed Patrick Satorie. Conrod Goulbourne got one back in the 86th minute but the Rattlers held on to win.
 
TURNING POINT
Kieman Akers goal with only two seconds left in the first half gave the Rattlers a two goal advantage. A cross ricocheted off the keeper before he calmly slotted the ball in the back of the net. The timely goal ended up being the deciding goal in the match.
 
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Conrod Goulbourne opened the scoring account for the Buffs with his 10th career goal.
- Alex Villalon recorded his first career assist on Goulbourne's goal.
- Patrick Satorie had a match-high four saves.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- WT outshot St. Mary's in the second half, 4-2.
- The Buffs started three freshmen (Ivan Ulloa, Alan Salazar and Michael Garcia) and three transfers (Jake Wiffen, Shane Dockery and Tom Cowling).
- Newcomers Alex Villalon and Andrew Pillers were two of three Buffs to have a shot on goal.
 
NEWS & NOTES
- Goulbourne has now scored a goal in each of his seasons at WT.
- With the loss, the Buffs now hold a 17-2-2 advantage over the Rattlers.
- The Buffs haven't started a season with two losses since 2011, when they lost their first four matches.
 
UP NEXT
The Buffs will now face Texas A&M-International on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Laredo, Texas. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
