CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M finished the 2015 Woodward Invitational off in style on Sunday afternoon as the top ranked Lady Buffs used two homeruns including an inside-the-park solo shot by
Tyler Wilkinson in the first inning to top the ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo, 4-2 on a cold and windy day at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs move to 10-1 overall while Pueblo falls to 4-8.
The Lady Buffs wasted no time scoring in the top of the first inning as
Tyler Wilkinson led off the game with an inside the park homerun to left field for the first WT inside-the-park homerun since last season when
Jessica Sipe connected on a grand slam against New Mexico Highlands on April 15
th. WT used the homerun to their advantage again in the bottom of the third inning as
Kaisha Dacosin led off the frame with a solo shot to straight away center field for the 2-0 lead.
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Lacey Taylor singled up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in
Stacey Ramirez and
Renee Erwin for the 4-0 lead. The ThunderWolves wouldn't go down without a fight as they used a two run single by Sidney Bailey with two outs but
Kilee Halbert finished off the game with a strikeout with the bases loaded and two outs to end the game, 4-2.
Hannah Newcomb registered another strong outing as the junior right hander picked up the win (3-0) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in her 6.1 innings of work while Halbert picked up her first collegiate save, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
The Lady Buffs return to action next weekend as they host the 2015 Lady Buff Invite on Friday and Saturday with doubleheaders set against St. Edward's (Fri. at 3:00 p.m.) and Newman (Sat. at 1:00 p.m.) at Schaeffer Park in Canyon.
