CANYON, Texas – Conrod Goulbourne's two first half goals were enough for West Texas A&M as they defeated Texas A&M-International, 2-0, Tuesday night at The Pitch. The Buffs are currently on a three-match winning streak and have not allowed a goal in any of those matches.
"I thought at times we played really well," head coach
Butch Lauffer said. "I was happy with the chances we created I the first 20 minutes of the match and first 25 minutes of the second half. If Jake (Wiffen) can get healthy, he gives us a lot of versatility and experience. I thought Pat (Satorie) was really solid tonight in goal. He didn't have to make a lot of saves but made all the plays he needed. Overall, we had a lot of good performances by a lot of different players."
Goulbourne scored the first of two goals in the third minute off a near perfect corner from
Austin Henderson. Goulbourne was left unmarked near the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The Buffs kept up with the early pressure when
Jake Wiffen nearly doubled their lead in the 31
st minute but was denied by the keeper. Goulbourne scored his second of the match on a penalty kick in 37
th minute after the Dustdevils were called for a hand ball. TAMUI tried to pull one back right before half but were denied by
Patrick Satorie. The Buffs held a 10-3 advantage with seven of those shots on goal.
The Dustdevils tried to regain some momentum in the second half with some early pressure but Satorie made sure that didn't happen. The save of the night came in the 62 minute as Satorie denied a blast from the Dustdevils Abraham Lopez. Wiffen had a golden opportunity to put the match away in the 79
th minute after
Tre Norton found space on the left side of the pitch. Norton found Wiffen inside the box but his shot was cleared off the line by the TAMUI defenders.
The Buffs improve their record to 6-4-0, 3-0-0 at home while TAMUI fall to 3-7-0.
