CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs were unable to recover from a late first half goal as they fell to #5 Angelo State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch. The Rambelles used goals from Payton Shlemon and Haley Mendel to hand WT its first home loss of the season. The loss drops their record to 6-7-1, 3-3-1 in the Lone Star Conference. WT currently sits in fourth in the conference standings.
Just likein their first meeting earlier this month, the Lady Buffs came out firing on all cylinders.
Khadidra Debesette nearly put WT in front in the first minute but her shot was blocked. Debesette continued to pressure the defense adding another shot in the sixth minute.
Karyn Forbes had a scoring opportunity in the 8
th and 12
th minutes but was denied by Shantel Wittke. WT continued with the pressure in the 23
rd minute as
Alejandra Dockery's shot from 25 yards out forced a Wittke save.
The Rambelles started to gather momentum near the end of the first half as both Ashley Exford and Sierra Anderson both had shots on goal. The Rambelles scored their first goal in the 45
th minute when Dang found space just outside the box and forced Dippel to make a save. The deflection went straight to the foot of Shlemon who calmly found the back of the net for the second time this season.
WT held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, four of those on goal. They also earned two corners to the Rambelles one.
WT nearly leveled the match in the 53
rd minute on a shot from Forbes but Wittke denied her once more.
Rachel Herring and Dockery caused trouble to ASU's defense in the 66
th minute but were unable to produce a goal. Just as the Lady Buffs were gaining momentum and looked to even the match, ASU scored its second of the game. Mendel scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 77
th minute. Kathleen's Keoughan's corner fell at the foot of Loni Byers and tapped it over to Mendel for the goal. The Lady Buffs poured numbers forward but were unable to find a goal in the latter stages of the match as Wittke picked up her eighth shutout of the season.
TURNING POINTPayton Shlemon's goal in in the 45
th minute proved to be the game-winner.
