PORTALES, N.M. – A world class strike from
Christian Suthers in the second half was the difference on Wednesday afternoon as the West Texas A&M men's soccer team defeated Eastern New Mexico, 1-0. Suthers goal in the 53
rd minute came as a result of constant pressure by the Buffs attack and solid defensive play.
Conrod Goulbourne's shot from long range nearly put WT ahead in the 13
th minute but was saved by James Gutierrez. ENMU responded in the 15
th minute when it looked like Robert Raspudic had an empty net but his shot was cleared off the line by
Chris Johnson. Tom Vickers nearly put WT ahead right before the half but Gutierrez was there to handle his header. The Buffs outshot the Greyhounds, 6-4, in the first 45 minutes.
Suthers struck in the 53
rd minute after receiving a deflection just outside the box. After finding some space, he curled the ball into the upper 90 just out of the reach of Gutierrez. After gaining the lead, the Buffs continued to press the issue and nearly added another when
George Beasley's shot was deflected out of bounds by Gutierrez.
