Buffalo Basketball Game Notes

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's basketball team began the New Year in much the same way it closed out 2014, by winning games. After beginning the season 0-3, the Buffs won six-straight contests including nine of 10 heading into Lone Star Conference competition. The Buffs started 2015 last weekend with wins on back-to-back days over Mid-America Christian and Hillsdale Baptist. They then opened up LSC play on Wednesday with a 73-58 road loss to Midwestern State, a team receiving votes in the latest NABC National Rankings. WT will now look for a win in its LSC home opener against Cameron on Saturday, Jan. 10. Tipoff against the Aggies is scheduled for 4 p.m. from the First United Bank Center (FUBC) in Canyon, Texas.

CHAVLOVICH PICKS UP WEEKLY HONORS FOR WT: Freshman David Chavlovich of the West Texas A&M men's basketball team was honored on Monday afternoon as the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league's office in Richardson, Texas. Chavlovich helped propel the Buffs to a six-game winning streak this past weekend with two wins over Mid-America Christian and Hillsdale Baptist at home.

Chavlovich is the first Buff to pick up weekly honors on the offensive side from the LSC this season as the Buffs improved to 9-4 overall, winning nine of their last 10 after beginning the season 0-3. Fellow freshman Carl White received the honors on the defensive side two weeks ago.

On the weekend, Chavlovich led the team with 23.5 points per game, shooting 16-for-29 (.552) from the field and 13-for-23 (.565) in 3-point field goal attempts. He grabbed five rebounds, dished out 10 assists and added a steal, playing a team-high 64 minutes in games on back-to-back days.

HEAD COACH TOM BROWN: WT welcomed in its 17th head coach in program history earlier this spring in Tom Brown who comes to Canyon after an impressive career as the Associate Head Coach at Winona State, one of the most successful Division II men's basketball programs in recent history. Brown coached the Warriors to two National Championships and three appearances in the title game while at WSU. His accomplishments there also include four Elite Eight appearances, six conference championships, five conference tournament titles, 10-straight 20 win seasons, 10 All-Americans and three National Players of the Year.

Brown will be joined on the bench by first-year Associate Head Coach Chris Gove and Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson. Gove, like Brown, comes to WT after a 16-year stint as an assistant at WSU. After spending the previous two years on the coaching staff at Illinois Wesleyan and previously playing under Brown and Gove at WSU, Henderson begins his first season with the Buffs as well.

LSC PRESEASON POLL: Last week, the LSC announced the annual men's basketball preseason poll and awards. WT was picked eighth in the league heading into the 2014-15 season. Tarleton State topped the preseason rankings while Xavier Blackburn of Midwestern State was chosen as the Preseason Player of the Year.

TSU was picked in the top spot with 12 first-place votes and 156 points, closely edging MSU, who received five first-place nods and 155 points. Angelo State comes in at third with 134 points and one top vote, followed by Texas A&M-Commerce in fourth (117 points and three first-place votes), and Cameron in fifth (66 points). Texas A&M-Kingsville (59 points), Eastern New Mexico (57 points and one top vote) and WT (48 points) rounded out the poll.

CAMERON AT A GLANCE: The Aggies head into Saturday's game in Canyon with a 9-4 overall record and 1-0 mark in LSC play. They opened up the season with a three-game winning streak, featuring wins over St. Gregory's, Oklahoma Science & Arts, and Northwestern Oklahoma State. Cameron then dropped three straight to Arkansas Tech, Drury, and East Central before a win over Oklahoma Christian and loss to Rogers State. Since, the Aggies have been victorious in six-straight, including their latest, a 98-71 win over Eastern New Mexico at home in their LSC home-opener.

The Aggies are led in scoring by Deondre Ray, a junior small forward from Fort Worth, Texas, who is averaging 16.1 points per game and shooting .567 from the field and .458 from beyond the arc. They have three additional players who are scoring in double-figures, including senior guard Desmond Henry (11.5 ppg), junior guard Cameron Lee (11.4), and junior forward Jamaal Brantley (11.2).

WT leads the all-time series, 28-12, over the Aggies. The Buffs dropped both meetings last season, including the last, a 63-58 defeat at home on Feb. 15, 2014.

MIDWESTERN STATE REVISITED: A six-game winning streak for WT came to an end as the Buffs fell to rival Midwestern State, 73-58, in their Lone Star Conference opener on the road at Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. After trailing by 21 in the second half, the Buffs managed to pull within nine of the Mustangs; however, a late push would not be enough as WT fell to 9-5 on the year and 0-1 in LSC play in its league opener. MSU improved to 13-3 on a current nine-game winning streak and moved to 2-0 in LSC competition.

The Buffs were led in scoring by senior Miles Gatewood with 16 points off 5-for-15 shooting from the field while adding five rebounds, five assists, and a steal. Fellow senior Tez Dumars added 12 points and went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. WT would finish the night going 21-for-61 from the field (.344) compared to 28-for-57 (.491) for the Mustangs.

WT cut the home team's advantage to 10 at the 9:39 mark at 55-45 and then once again with 6:20 remaining as junior Jeff Bonner grabbed a layup in traffic with an ensuing free-throw on the foul. That would make it 59-49; however, the Buffs continued to struggle in their attempt at cracking single digits.

Gatewood would finally pull them within nine with another deep 3-pointer at 2:30 but MSU answered back with a couple more quick buckets to extend the lead once again. The Mustangs would hold on to finish with the 73-58 decision.

MSU did a large portion of its damage down low as it outrebounded WT 48-28 on the night and outscored the Buffs 46-26 in the paint. MSU also held a 19-8 advantage in second-chance points.

With the loss, WT falls to 31-29 in the all-time series with MSU. The Mustangs have also won seven consecutive at home over WT. The Buffs' last win inside Ligon Coliseum came on Feb. 13, 2008, that being an 86-63 decision.
