CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M hit .283 as a team as they registered their 27
th straight Lone Star Conference victory dating back to the 2012 season on Tuesday night as they swept the visiting Aggies of Cameron University (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) in front of over 400 fans at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon, Texas. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to 10-3 (3-0 LSC) while the Aggies fall to 5-5 (1-4 LSC) on the season.
The Aggies started off the match with an early 5-0 lead as they took advantage of three Lady Buff attack errors, WT responded as a pair of
Lauren Bevan kills cut the lead to 6-5 followed by a small WT run to force an Aggies timeout at 9-8. Cameron battled back to tie the set at 11-11 before five straight Lady Buff points highlighted by a
Jessica Johnson kill on an over ball, the Lady Buffs stretched their lead to 21-15 on a
McKenzie Long service ace in her first collegiate start, a
Leah Mayer kill ran the lead to 23-16 followed two points later by a Bevan kill to force set point. The Aggies responded with a kill of their own before
Kyli Schulz found
Kameryn Hayes on the outside to give WT the opening set, 25-18.
The Lady Buffs started off the second frame on a hot streak as they took the early 8-2 lead as Schulz found Mayer on the slide play followed by a Hayes solo kill on an over pass, WT stretched their lead to 13-7 on kills by
Lexi Davis and
Marisa Ochoa followed by a pair of Aggie kills before Hayes found Ochoa again on the outside to head into a WT timeout with the Lady Buffs leading 16-8. Long continued her run at the service line after the break as she also made two huge defensive plays on a long rally for a WT point to run the lead to 21-8, a block by Mayer and
Cori Haley forced set point but three straight Cameron ran the score to 24-12 before an Aggies service error ended the frame at 25-12.
The Aggies started off the third set on a 4-2 run before the Lady Buffs used a pair of blocks by Johnson to go along with a kill by the junior to take the 7-4 lead before the Aggies responded with a pair of points to force a Lady Buff timeout with WT leading 7-6. Cameron battled back to take the 12-10 lead before an Aggie service error and an attack error tied the match at 12-12, the set remained tied at 14-14 before a Hayes setter dump sparked a WT run highlighted by an
Aspen Sanders service ace to make it 20-16. CU cut the lead to 20-19 before kills by Hayes and Davis stretched the lead to 22-19,
Sydney Harlan registered her first kill at 23-20 before the teams traded points to force match point before a Cameron kill and a Bevan kill in the deep corner to end the match at 25-22.
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Bevan with 15 kills followed by Hayes with 11 and Haley with seven, Hayes dished out a team high 30 assists for the double-double while Schulz had 16 on the night,
Lauren Britten led all players with 21 digs while Long tallied nine in her first start as a Lady Buff. West Texas A&M hit .283 as a team with 51 kills on 120 attempts with 17 attack errors to go along with 47 assists, 61 digs and six total blocks on the night.
Cameron was led by Kat Evans and Rebecca Green with seven kills each followed by Paige Holt with four, Ingrid Boatman dished out a team high 11 assists on the night while teammates Cristina Viera and Kayla Hebert had 10 digs each. The Aggies hit .078 as a team with 26 kills on 115 attempts and 17 attack errors while registering 24 assists, 47 digs and no blocks on the night.
The Lady Buffs continue their homestand this weekend as they host the TexAnns of Tarleton State on Friday night with first serve set for 7 p.m. followed by a rematch of the last two South Central Regional Title Matches as the Belles of Angelo State come to Canyon on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box".
