ALAMOSA, Colo. – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team improved its record on Sunday afternoon to 3-1 with a 5-0 shutout victory over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Buffs were led by sophomore
Chris Johnson with two goals as WT tallied five goals off of just seven shots. With the loss, the Grizzlies fall to 1-2 on the season.
"I thought overall, considering the second game on a road trip with very high altitude, that these guys performed really well," said head coach
Butch Lauffer. "We also had much better play from a goalkeeping standpoint which was great to see. It helped out a lot to get ahead early with a couple mistakes on their part with that first goal and then on the penalty kick. It says a lot about these guys with some of the injuries we have right now for them to come out and play the way they did. There is not much room to complain when we come out and score 10 goals in two games as well."
Neither the Buffs nor the Grizzlies were able to generate many chances in the opening 15 minutes of the frame but WT took advantage of the two it had with two goals off two shots. Redshirt junior
Tre Norton started things off at the 10:10 mark as he sank in a goal for the early 1-0 advantage.
Just minutes later, at the 13:40 mark, senior midfielder
Vitor Cardoso took a PK opportunity for the Buffs. He converted on the attempt to increase the Buffs' lead to 2-0. With the goal, Cardoso remains perfect in his career with WT from PKs, now 3-for-3.
The Buffs would never ease up on the gas through the remainder of the first frame. They set themselves up for a quick corner kick opportunity in the 20
th minute, taken by junior
Austin Henderson. The chance ended with a header goal by Johnson, his second score of the season. He was assisted by senior defender
Michael Williams.
Only two minutes later, Johnson would grab another goal for the Buffs, this time assisted by Cardoso, making the lead now 4-0 with his third goal in the previous two games.
"Chris has really played well for us this weekend and I think his game is coming together pretty well," added Lauffer. "It's been an adjustment playing at this level and he is doing a great job of getting some key goals at the right time, especially looking back at his goal against Pueblo on Friday night."
After three more corners by Henderson with the four-goal lead, the Buffs finally attempted a shot that did not find its way into the net. Junior transfer
Johnny Oliver was the guy this time but his attempt was stopped by ASU keeper Jacob Ramirez in the 36
th minute. Shortly after, Cardoso received another chance but sent his shot high in the 41
st minute.
The Buffs went into the break up 6-2 in shots and 5-0 in shots-on-goal. Their high offensive efficiency resulted in a .667 shot percentage and a .833 shot-on-goal percentage. They also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-0.
Sophomore
Patrick Satorie did not face a single shot-on-goal in his third start as a Buffalo. Starting ASU goalie A Baumeister was pulled after allowing four goals in 21 minutes. Ramiriez went into the half with one save in 24 minutes of action.
WT wasted no time in adding to the score in the second frame as freshman
Alex Cervantes grabbed his first career goal as a Buffalo in the 48
th minute from a rebound off the keeper.
The Grizzlies were then able to generate their first shot of the second half in the 62
nd minute with an attempt by Benjamin Gibble, followed by another from Symon Fabbricatore; however both would sail high of the net. Soon after they were able to find some more rhythm offensively, receiving a couple corners by Ethan Jackson. On the second, they would create their first scoring chance with a header attempt by Matt Anderson, but the shot was saved by senior keeper
Carlos Ruiz, who started the second half in goal for the Buffs.
ASU really put on the pressure through the remainder of the game but could not find the net. The Grizzlies would get another six good looks in their attacking end, with two being saved by Ruiz while Nick Webb nearly put the home team on the board but found the post.
With the Buffs holding onto the decisive lead through the second frame, the Grizzlies led on the shot chart, 12-7; however, the Buffs held the advantage in shots-on-goal, 6-3. Cardoso and Johnson led the way with two each while three other Buffs had one.
Satorie got the win for the Buffs this afternoon and improves his record to 2-1 between the pipes.
WT will return to action on Thursday night for a home matchup with Dallas Baptist as it begins a six-game homestand at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas. The Buffs are undefeated in six meetings all-time with the Patriots. The last time both teams met was in Canyon on Sept. 19, 2013, a match which ended up being called due to severe weather. Thursday's game will begin at 7 p.m. and live stats and a free video web stream will be provided by West Texas A&M Athletic Media Relations.
