Box Score / Season Statistics St. Edward's 9-20-14: (Live Stats / Live Video / Tickets) Buffalo Soccer Game Notes CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team began its six-game home stretch on Thursday night with a 1-0 shutout victory over Dallas Baptist. An early first-half penalty kick by senior
Vitor Cardoso gave the Buffs their third-straight win of the season as they improve to 4-1. With the loss, the Patriots fall to 2-4.
As usual, the Buffs pressured early and often in tonight's matchup. Around the 4 minute mark, junior
Austin Henderson took the Buffs' first shot attempt, sending it high of the mark, and took an early corner kick as well.
Cardoso put the Buffs on top early with a 16
th minute goal. Senior
Michael Williams was taken out the previous play in the box by DBU keeper Chuck Shober, leading to the free chance. Cardoso converted on the kick to give the home team the 1-0 advantage. He remains perfect from PKs in his WT career, now 4-for-4.
Levi Schwartz would grab the Patriots' first shot attempt in the 18
th minute but his shot would go wide left. The next minute of play would see Henderson take another corner for the Buffs, leading to a shot-on-goal by senior
Christopher Hutton. His attempt would be stopped by Shober.
In the 24
th minute, the Buffs would place back-to-back shots-on-goal, both being off the feet of Cardoso and sophomore
Gabe Williams. Then at the 30:25 mark in the first frame, the Buffs nearly grabbed another goal. Henderson took the corner for the Buffs as he connected with junior
Johnny Oliver who sent in a header that beat the keeper but DBU defender Cameron Hatch stepped up to clear on the goal line for the defensive team save.
The Buffs led at the break in shots, 6-2, and shots-on-goal, 5-1. Cardoso led the way for the home team with two attempts while four other Buffs had one shot each. Starting keeper sophomore
Patrick Satorie had one save in the first half.
WT started the second frame on Thursday night much the same way as the first, with constant pressure in its attacking zone. Sophomore
Chris Johnson grabbed back-to-back chances early on, sending the first wide before finding the target leading to another save by Shober.
In the 56
th minute, freshman forward
Axel Insulander received a nice cross inside the close right wing and placed a header that went just inches past the right post. Just two minutes later, Insulander would receive a similar opportunity in the same location as he sent a leaping shot wide right again after Cardoso's free kick just wound up a little farther than his intended placement.
Play turned back and forth for the remainder of the match while both teams traded attacks. However, the Buffs would get the best chances in that period. A couple in the 70
th minute came very close with an attempt from
Gabe Williams which was saved and one by sophomore
Christian Suthers which barely missed wide.
The Buffs held a strong 16-7 advantage in total shots on Thursday while they placed seven of those attempts on target. Insulander grabbed a team-high four shots while Johnson attempted three. Satorie got the win and moves to 3-1 after stopping two shots on the night and allowing no goals. The Buffs also held the edge in corners, 5-4.
