Buffs Fall in Key Regional Showdown with St. Edward’s at Home, 4-0

Box Score

Season Statistics

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team suffered a big blow on Saturday night at The Pitch as it was shutout by St. Edward's, 4-0, in a big South Central Region matchup. The defeat snaps the Buffs' three-game winning streak and is the second loss for the team this season on home turf. They now fall to 4-2 on the season while the Hilltoppers improve to 3-2 with the win.

Samuel Jackson led the way for the visitors with two goals in tonight's contest while Kyle Pujats gave SEU the game-winner early on in just the 17th minute of the match. The Hilltoppers managed to tally the four goals off of just 10 total shots and six shots-on-goal. They managed to hold on to the 3-0 advantage and extend the lead even while playing the final 21 minutes a man down after Ty Mobley was ejected after receiving a red card at the 69:16 mark.

The first 15 minutes of tonight's match was very quiet as only Buffs were able to put up any scoring chance. That opportunity came from senior Christopher Hutton in the 6th minute as he got an open look on the goal but sent the game's first shot a little high.

SEU grabbed what would be the deciding goal early on in the first frame at just the 16:23 mark. Josh Taylor took the corner for the Hilltoppers and played a perfect ball inside the box allowing Pujtas to head in the winning score.

Jackson grabbed his first goal of the match and the season in the 23rd minute. He received a cross from Kyle Ruck from the left wing and sent the one-timer to the back of the net for the early 2-0 lead.

The Buffs responded with some very good scoring opportunities through the remainder of the half but were unable to find the goal to get back into the match. Senior defender Michael Williams and Hutton both had shot-on-goal chances from inside the box in the 26th and 32nd minutes, respectively, but were both denied by SEU keeper Kevin Leib. Then in the closing minutes of the first half, senior Vitor Cardoso and freshman Ombrai Oguoko put up two shots each as Cardoso's first attempt was blocked before Leib stepped in to stop the final three before the horn sounded.

WT held the advantage in shots at the break, 7-4, while Cardoso, Hutton and Oguoko each had two. Sophomore Patrick Satorie had one save while allowing two goals in the first 45 minutes of action.

Cardoso found some more chances early in the second frame before junior George Beasley came off the bench with a couple of attempts but the Buffs would fail to cut the lead before SEU grabbed the three-goal advantage. That third score came at the 63:07 mark on a tough play where Satorie had no chance at making a stop. Josh Taylor sent a hard strike in from the top of the box that rattled the right post but the ball took a Hilltopper's bounce right into the foot of Ruck who chipped in the easy goal right in front of the line.

Control on both sides was lost over the next 10 minutes of the match with an onslaught of cards and penalties handed out by the officials. It would lead to the ejection of Mobley followed by another yellow on the SEU bench before play could settle down again.

The final goal of the match came shortly after in the 72nd minute. Satorie was nearly able to handle a tough save on a hard shot by Andrew Fox. As he was falling the ball came out briefly while he was nearly able to recover before Jackson stormed in for another chip-in goal from close range.

Satorie would leave the match at the 73:30 mark, allowing some time for senior Carlos Ruiz between the pipes. Satorie took the loss as his record falls to 3-2. He finished the night with two saves.

Some of the Buffs' substitutes looked strong offensively as well late in the game as freshmen Brandon Bautista and Richard Munroe both had good looks on the goal.

Though dropping the game 4-0, the Buffs led in total shots on the night, 15-10, and shots-on-goal, 7-6. Cardoso had four of those attempts while Hutton and Oguoko finished with two and seven other WT players had one each. Leib improved his record to 3-2 with the win in goal and he finished the night with seven saves for SEU.

WT will return to action next Thursday night, Sept. 25, as it hosts Oklahoma Christian in the third game of its six-game home stretch. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas. The Buffs are undefeated all-time against OCU in five meetings. The last time both teams met was Oct. 5, 2013, a 1-0 victory for the Buffs.
