CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M open the postseason in San Antonio this weekend as they battle the #23 St. Mary's Rattlers in a best-of-three series during the opening round of the 2026 Lone Star Conference Championships at Dickson Stadium.

A LOOK AT THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's enters the Lone Star Conference Championship with an overall record of 36-14 as they finished third in the league standings. The Rattlers are 18-9 inside of Dickson Stadium so far this season, dropping three-of-four games to LSC Champion UT Tyler last weekend in San Antonio. StMU is making their fifth appearances in the LSC Championship (2021, 2022, 2023, 2025, 2026) holding a 4-8 record in the event since joining the league in 2020.

The Rattlers are hitting .298 on the season with 390 runs scored on 467 hits with 85 doubles, 14 triples and 38 homeruns to drive in 336 RBI for a slugging percentage of .443. Garrett Brooks leads the way offensively for the Rattlers as the senior outfielder from Spring Branch is hitting .332 on the year with 14 doubles, one triple and eight homers to drive in a team-high 52 RBI for a slugging percentage of .549 to go along with 35 walks and 33 strikeouts for an on-base clip of .438.

St. Mary's enters the weekend with a team ERA of 5.23, allowing 287 runs (233 earned) on 430 hits with 177 walks and 376 strikeouts during their 401.0 innings for an opposing batting average of .274. Gabe Cook is a potential game one starter as the junior lefty from San Antonio is 6-1 on the year with a 3.93 ERA, allowing 24 runs (23 earned) on 41 hits with 14 walks and 44 strikeouts in his 52.2 frames for an opponent batting average of .210.

StMU HEAD COACH FRANK KELLNER
Frank Kellner was named the eighth skipper in the history of the St. Mary's baseball program on July 17, 2023 following 20 seasons as the top assistant at Temple College. While at TC, Kellner was a part of 657 victories with two NTJCAC Championships as 36 players were selected in the MLB Draft. Kellner played professional baseball with the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers organizations, reaching Triple-A in five of his eight seasons in the minors.Â

SERIES HISTORY
The Buffaloes lead the all-time series against the Rattlers, 18-16 with the first meeting between the two teams coming on February 2, 2002. The Buffs are 14-9 all-time in San Antonio and it marks just the second postseason meeting between the two teams, the first coming in the South Central Regional Tournament back on May 16, 2015 in Grand Junction, Colorado in a 3-2 victory by the Rattlers.Â

WT HEAD COACH CORY HALL
Cory Hall is in his second season at the helm of the West Texas A&M Baseball program after being promoted to head coach in the Summer of 2024. The first season under Hall's leadership saw the Buffaloes finish 31-21 with a 29-19 mark in Lone Star Conference play, advancing to the LSC Championships for the 14th time in program history.

Hall spent 14 seasons as the top assistant and pitching coach for the Buffaloes. Hall has had four different pitchers (Austin Moore, Josh Payne, Marshall Kasowski, Joe Corbett) drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time in Canyon with multiple other professional players learning under one of the top pitching minds in collegiate baseball.

WT COACHING STAFF
Shawn Neale was elevated to Associate Head Coach in the Summer of 2025 as the Toronto native returns for his 10th season in Canyon. WT ranked 13th nationally in batting average along with 6th in triples, 11th in slugging percentage, 15th in on-base percentage, 21st in scoring, 27th in doubles, 41st in homeruns, and 47th in hits.

Ryan Cantrell joined the West Texas A&M Baseball coaching staff in August following five seasons as the pitching coach and lead recruiter at Cerro Coso Community College in California.
Nollan Koon is in his second season in the dugout for the Buffaloes as a graduate assistant coach.

THE BUFFS IN THE LSC TOURNAMENT
West Texas A&M is making their 14th straight and 16th overall appearance in the Lone Star Conference Championships. WT has made six appearances in the LSC Title Game with three tournament crowns (2016, 2017, 2019). The Buffs are 19-25 all-time in the event with appearances coming in (1994, 2006, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026). WT has claimed 34 All-Tournament selections including three MVP honors (Kyle Tinius - 2016, Dominic Yearego - 2017, Keone Givens - 2019).

NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
The Buffs have been tabbed eight in the first numerical ranking for the NCAA Division II South Central Region announced on Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. The top six teams in the South Central Region will take part in the Regional Tournament taking place on May 14-17 at two regional sites.

NCBWA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL
Colorado Mesa claimed all 20 first place votes to remain atop of the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Wednesday afternoon. Tampa sits second followed by North Greenville, Point Loma, Pittsburg State, Catawba, Grand Valley State, UT Tyler, Rogers State and Seton Hill to round out the top ten.

The South Central Region was represented by Colorado Mesa (1st), UT Tyler (8th), Angelo State (19th), St. Mary's (23rd), and MSU Denver (RV).

THIS IS LSC BASEBALL
Due to being NCAA Division II provisional members, UTD and SRSU are not eligible for the LSC baseball tournament but are able to win the LSC regular season title and postseason awards.

The LSC baseball tournament's opening round is scheduled for May 1-3 (Friday-Sunday) at the site of the league's No. 2, 3 and 4 seed. The championship round is set for May 8-10 (Friday-Sunday) at the league's No. 1 seed. The NCAA Division II South Central Regional is scheduled for May 14-17 with the Super Regional following on May 21-23. The NCAA Division II Baseball Championship is set for May 29-June 6 at USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

LSC NEWS & NOTES
The Lone Star Conference baseball regular season is complete, and UT Tyler won the title for the first time in program history. The No. 8-ranked Patriots went 40-10 and were the only league team to not lose a series all season. UT Tyler, which has won 22 of its last 24 games, lead the league in pitching (3.93 ERA) and fielding (.975). It has also scored a conference-high 464 runs.

With the regular season title, UT Tyler earned a first-round bye in the LSC Baseball Championship and will host the double-elimination second round (May 7-9) at Irwin Field in Tyler, Texas. The six teams joining the Patriots in the LSC tournament Angelo State (36-14), No. 15 St. Mary's (36-14), St. Edward's (31-18), Lubbock Christian (31-19), West Texas A&M (28-22) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-25).
