CANYON, Texas – The Buffs of West Texas A&M return to the court on Thursday night as they welcome the UT Dallas Comets to the First United Bank Center for Lone Star Conference action with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. in Canyon.
 
EASTERN NEW MEXICO REWIND
Tuesday night featured a back-and-forth rivalry battle as the #10 Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds used a late scoring run to hand West Texas A&M an 87-76 Lone Star Conference defeat at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. Brock Mishak scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and added four rebounds. Fontaine Williams Jr. contributed 16 points and recorded four assists while collecting two steals.
 
SCOUTING THE COMETS
UT Dallas enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-15 including a 5-8 mark in Lone Star Conference action. The Comets are 2-8 on the road so far this season with victories at Sul Ross State (91-80) and Angelo State (65-53). The Comets are making the transition to NCAA Division II following a successful time in NCAA Division III where they registered an overall mark of 444-268 with eight NCAA DIII Tournament Trips and five American Southwest Conference Championships.
 
Last week saw the Comets drop a 86-60 contest to #7 Lubbock Christian before rebounding with a 75-74 win over Midwestern State. Zach Spitzer hit a jumper in the paint as time expired for the thrilling win over the Mustangs. Will Warren led the way for the Comets, going 5-of-13 from the field including 3-of-9 from deep for a team-best 14 points with seven boards and four assists.
 
Hudson Goellner leads the way offensively for UTD as the freshman from Poetry, Texas has gone 92-of-210 (50.8%) from the floor including 30-of-72 (41.7%) from deep and 19-of-30 (63.3%) from the free throw line to average 11.8 points per game to go along with 116 rebounds, 21 assists, 13 steals and 12 blocks.
 
UTD HEAD COACH JARED FLEMING
Former Comet standout Jared Fleming became the third head coach men's basketball coach in UT Dallas history in July 2023 after serving the previous eight years as an assistant coach.
 
In his first season at the helm, Fleming guided the Comets to an American Southwest Championship and the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament. The Comets went 15-10 as an NCAA Division II Independent in 2024-25, giving Fleming a career 34-20 record (.630). UTD ranked 16th in the nation in assists per game (17.5) and 21st in offensive rebounds per contest (13.93) in 2023-24. Fleming coached four All-Conference selections, including the ASC Defensive Player of the Year.
 
THE SERIES
Thursday night is just the second all-time meeting on the hardwood between West Texas A&M and UT Dallas. The Buffs took the first meeting 94-92 back on December 13th in Richardson. UT Dallas is making their first trip to the First United Bank Center.
 
The previous meeting saw the Buffs shoot 48.3% (29-of-60) from the floor including 34.6% (9-of-26) from behind the arc on their way to a 94-92 victory in Richardson. Fontaine Williams Jr. led the way offensively going 7-of-15 from the floor and 12-of-15 from the charity stripe for a game-high 26 points with seven assists and a steal. 
 
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown, now in his 12th season at the helm of the West Texas A&M men's basketball program, has built the Buffs into one of the elite NCAA Division II programs in the nation.  He has guided WT to nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments including the Buffs first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2021. Brown reached the 300-win plateau with an 87-68 victory at Cameron on February 5, 2026.
 
Brown was hired as the 17th head coach in program history on April 16, 2014. In the past 10 seasons, Coach Brown and his staff are 281-71 (.804) and an average of 27 wins a season with appearances in the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four (2) and National Title game. During his time in Canyon, Brown is 301-84 (.787) overall and 162-50 (.773) in league action. 
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
Defending Regional Champion Dallas Baptist claimed 42 of the possible 51 first place votes for a total of 850 points to sit atop of the poll followed by St. Mary's (two first place, 724), Lubbock Christian (four first place, 720), St. Edward's (669) and West Texas A&M (two first place, 654) to round out the top five.
 
Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico tied for sixth with 592 points followed by Midwestern State (558), UT Permian Basin (468), Texas A&M International (one first place, 350), Texas A&M-Kingsville (330), Cameron (301), Oklahoma Christian (266), UT Tyler (260), Western New Mexico (193), UT Dallas (188) and Sul Ross State (88).
 
LIVE COVERAGE 
The LSC and FloSports reached a historic agreement in August of 2024 for the largest streaming rights deal in NCAA Division II history. LSC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Fontaine Williams Jr. averaged 25.5 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists to fuel a pair of road wins at Cameron and Oklahoma Christian. Williams Jr. was 6-for-13 from 3-point range, made 21 of 23 free-throw attempts and had two steals. He tied a season-high with 29 points against Cameron to help snap the Buffs' five-game skid. Williams Jr. has scored 20 or more points 12 times this season and reached double figures in all but one game.
 
LONE STAR CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES
With three weeks remaining in the Lone Star Conference men's basketball regular season, DBU (18-6 overall) and No. 11 Eastern New Mexico (19-3 overall) are tied for first place at 12-2.
 
DBU topped No. 7 Lubbock Christian (20-4, 11-3 LSC) 80-75 in a first-place showdown in Dallas, Texas on Saturday night. ENMU has won a league-best seven consecutive games and is unbeaten away from home (10-0).
 
Western New Mexico (17-5, 11-4 LSC) is receiving votes in the national poll for the first time in program history. No. 19 St. Edward's (20-4, 9-4 LSC) has won four games in a row.
 
In non-conference play, LSC teams have gone 40-24 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams.
