No. 1 Lady Buffs Host Rival Greyhounds on Sunday

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M softball hosts Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico on Sunday, April 13 at Schaeffer Park in Canyon. The Lady Buffs (42-2, 32-2 LSC) and Greyhounds (26-18, 19-15 LSC) are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with game two to follow.

The Athletic Communications Department from West Texas A&M will provide live stats and a pay-per-view web stream. Fans will need to purchase a monthly ($19.99) or annual ($107.88) subscription with FloSports, the official streaming provider of the Lone Star Conference. The subscription allows fans access to any content available on FloSports.
 
A LOOK AT THE #1 LADY BUFFS
West Texas A&M softball ran its win streak to 22 games on Friday afternoon, defeating the Western New Mexico Mustangs twice. The Lady Buffs cruised to an 11-2 run-rule victory in game one before posting a one-hit shutout of WNMU in a 5-0 game two win. WT improves to 42-2 on the season and 32-2 in Lone Star Conference play while Western New Mexico falls to 13-30 overall and 10-24 in conference play.
 
The Lady Buffs feature another high-octane lineup that ranks inside the top 10 for Division II for almost every offensive category including doubles, home runs, on-base percentage, RBIs, and triples. WT leads the country in batting average, hits, runs, scoring, and slugging percentage.
 
Junior Emilee Boyer's .500 batting average leads the team where 13 different players have a .300 batting average or higher. Boyer's 73 RBIs lead Division II while her home runs and slugging percentage ranks in the top three. Lauren Granger's 136 total bases hold the national lead while her seven triples rank in the fourth nationally.
 
In the circle, WT has posted a 1.88 ERA with 310 strikeouts and 75 earned runs in 280 innings. All four WT pitchers have reached double-digit strikeouts including Boyer with 170, Heidi Vortherms with 96, Kendall Selitzky with 34, and Ashley Mandell with 10.
 
Head Coach Michael Mook is in his sixth season at WT, registering a 228-55 (.806) record in that time. For his career, Mook holds 382-116 record in 10 seasons for an overall winning percentage of .767.
 
SCOUTING EASTERN NEW MEXICO
The Greyhounds host the Lady Buffs following a 4-0 weekend against Sul Ross State and UT Permian Basin. Against the Falcons, ENMU posted back-to-back shutouts with 4-0 and 6-0 wins in Portales. The Greyhounds enter Friday's games with a 20-14 overall record and 13-11 mark in Lone Star Conference action including 4-4 in West Division play.
 
Aylene Lucero leads the ENMU offense as the graduate student holds a .434 batting average with a 1.213 OPS, .676 slugging percentage, and .537 on-base percentage. The Albuquerque native leads the team with 63 hits, 51 runs, 36 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases while tying for the team lead with two triples. Alondra Vasquez follows with a .389 batting average, 49 hits, 35 runs, 10 home runs, and 41 RBI.
 
As a pitching staff, the Greyhounds hold a 4.42 ERA in 291.1 innings of work. During that time, opponents are hitting .271 while hitting 46 doubles, seven triples, and 37 home runs while striking out 246 times. Miranda Guillen leads the team with a 2.59 ERA on 25 appearances and 19 starts with 12 complete games, three shutouts, and 127 strikeouts. Marissa Rodriguez follows with a 4.60 ERA with one complete game, three saves, and 34 strikeouts in 77.2 innings of work.
 
Amanda Fefel is in her fourth season as the head coach of the Eastern New Mexico program and fourth overall. Fefel holds a 96-104 (.480) record for her career with a matching record at the helm of the Greyhounds. 
 
THE SERIES
WT leads the all-time series with Eastern New Mexico with a 52-16 record with a 26-3 record in Canyon. The Lady Buffs are 13-3 against the Greyhounds under Michael Mook. When the two teams met in Portales on March 28, WT pulled away late in game one for a 7-2 victory before slugging their way to a 14-1 run-rule victory over the Greyhounds in game two. In the 2024 season, WT swept the Greyhounds in Canyon. Game one saw the Lady Buffs take down the Greyhounds 7-3 before taking the doubleheader 9-0 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings.

NFCA RANKINGS 
WT took over the top spot with 398 points as the Lady Buffs earned 14 first-place votes. Tampa fell one spot to No. 2 with two-first place votes and 383 points followed by UT Tyler with 370 points. Francis Marion stayed at No. 4 with 353 points as Central Oklahoma finishes the top five with 331 points. Auburn Montgomery (321), Angelo State (294), North Georgia (286), East Stroudsburg (282), and Harding (253) make up the remainder of the top 10.
 
The South Central region is represented by four teams with WT leading the way at No. 1. UT Tyler (3rd), Angelo State (7th), and Oklahoma Christian (19th) earned spots in the rankings.
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
Reigning National Champion UT Tyler took the top spot in the poll with 34 first-place votes and 672 points followed by WT with eight first-place votes and 642 points. Angelo State grabbed the final first-place vote for 590 points with Oklahoma Christian following at 528 points. Lubbock Christian and St. Mary's tied for fifth in the poll with each school totaling 483 points. Texas Woman's (382), Texas A&M-Kingsville (372), Cameron (348), and Eastern New Mexico (315) occupy the seventh through 10th spots, respectively. St. Edward's (293), Texas A&M International (215), Midwestern State (214), UT Permian Basin (97), and Sul Ross State (72) round out the poll.
