Buffs and #3 Angelo State Renew Their Rivalry in Canyon

CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M return to Wilder Park for a crucial four-game Lone Star Conference series with the defending Regional Champion Rams of Angelo State, the series starts on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. 
 
Amarillo National Bank serves as the weekend presenting sponsor with WT Baseball alumni returning to Canyon on Saturday afternoon.
 
A LOOK AT THE RAMS
Angelo State enters the weekend with an overall record of 31-7 with a 29-7 mark in Lone Star Conference action to sit atop of the league standings with 12 games remaining. The Rams are coming off a Top-25 series win over #21 St. Edward's in San Angelo as Angelo State won games one, two and four at Foster Field. 
 
LSC Preseason Player of the Year Jacob Guerrero is hitting .417 so far this season as the senior from Colleyville has 10 doubles, four triples and five homeruns to drive in 34 RBI with 28 walks and 20 strikeouts to go along with 16 stolen bases. ASU leads Division II Baseball in batting average as they are hitting .373 on the year with 100 doubles, 15 triples and 35 homeruns to drive in 376 RBI while stealing 100 bases, ranking 16th nationally.
 
Potential game two starter Dax Dathe has been dominant for the Rams on the mound, holding a 2.50 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 39.2 innings as the former Texas Tech Red Raider is 6-1 on the season, allowing a .188 opposing batting average. Angelo State holds a 4.59 staff ERA, allowing 170 runs (145 earned) on 278 hits with 144 walks and 309 strikeouts in 284.1 innings with opponents hitting .258 on the year.
 
RAMS IN 2024
2024 was another stellar campaign for the Rams as they started the NCAA Postseason as the sixth seed in the South Central Regional Championships, defeating WT and Colorado Mesa followed by a trip to Lubbock for the Super Regionals with two wins over Lubbock Christian. ASU returned to Cary, North Carolina as they advanced to the National Title Game before falling to the University of Tampa.
 
ASU HEAD COACH KEVIN BROOKS
Kevin Brooks has built the ASU Baseball program into a national power during his time in San Angelo, holding an overall record of 817-362 over the past 21 years with seven trips to the Division II College World Series (2007, 2015, 2016, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024). Brooks started the Angelo State program in 2005, advancing to the NCAA Postseason 12 times while the Rams have not registered a losing season under Brooks.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Angelo State holds a 67-45 advantage in the all-time series with the Buffs dating back to 2005. The Rams are 24-22 all-time in Canyon with their last trip to the Panhandle coming in 2023. The two teams matched up six times last season, splitting the regular season series in San Angelo before ASU claimed a pair of wins in the South Central Regional Tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
WT HEAD COACH CORY HALL
West Texas A&M didn't have to look far to find the new head coach for Buffalo Baseball as longtime Associate Head Coach Cory Hall was promoted to the skipper of the Buffs announced on June 28th. Hall has spent 14 seasons as the top assistant and pitching coach for the Buffs, having four different pitchers (Austin Moore, Josh Payne, Marshall Kasowski, Joe Corbett) drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time in Canyon with multiple other professional players learning under one of the top pitching minds in collegiate baseball.
 
WT COACHING STAFF
Shawn Neale was named WT's Recruiting Coordinator in 2022 as the Toronto native returns for his ninth season in Canyon, the Buffs ranked 13th nationally in batting average (.334) last season while sitting 16th in hits (623) and 24th in on-base percentage (.432). 
 
WT alumni Cooper Harris returns to Canyon as the new pitching coach for the Buffs following two seasons at LSC foe Cameron. Nollan Koon enters his first season in the dugout for the Buffaloes as a graduate assistant coach in December of 2024. Koon returns to the Texas Panhandle following time as a hitting coach at Northeastern State.
 
NATIONALLY SPEAKING
The Rams enter the weekend ranked #1 by both D2Baseball and the American Baseball Coaches Association, they sit third in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) Top-25 Poll announced on Wednesday afternoon.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Buffs rank 18th in the nation in team batting average (.334) while sitting 17th in doubles (86), 14th in on-base percentage (.443), 15th in runs (340), 13th in slugging percentage (.544) and 10th in triples (16). Tai Phetluangsy's eight saves on the season ranks the senior seventh in the nation.
 
THIS IS LSC BASEBALL
Throughout the year, all 13 LSC teams will play a single round-robin schedule with a four-game weekend series against each league opponent. 
 
The LSC Baseball Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top seven teams. The opening round is best-of-three series and will be held May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The league's top seed from the regular season will receive an opening-round bye and host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10.
 
AROUND THE LSC
Only three weekends remain in the Lone Star Conference baseball regular season.
 
Angelo State (31-7 overall, 29-7 LSC) has a one-game lead in the standings over UT Tyler (28-9, 28-8 LSC). The Rams, who took three games from fellow nationally-ranked St. Edward's last weekend, are the No. 1 ranked team in the country in two of the three national polls. UT Tyler had a weekend bye.
 
SEU (28-14, 27-13 LSC), West Texas A&M (26-12, 24-12 LSC), Eastern New Mexico (24-14, 22-14 LSC), Lubbock Christian (23-15, 22-14 LSC) and St. Mary's (23-15, 21-15 LSC) round out what would be the seven teams to qualify for the LSC tournament. Texas A&M-Kingsville (23-19, 22-18 LSC) is just three games out of the seventh spot.
 
ASU is leading the conference in hitting (.373) and fielding (.975), while UT Tyler leads in pitching (3.73 ERA). LCU has hit a league-high 58 home run, led by McCool's 22. In addition to homers, McCool is leading the LSC in RBI (60), slugging percentage (1.014) and OPS (1.544). UT Tyler's Drew Schmidt owns the league's top batting average at .430. UT Permian Basin's Kaleb Scull has 21 doubles and ENMU's Kyle Kiernan has five triples. SEU's Travis Chestnut has 31 stolen bases.
 
ASU's Dax Dathe (6-1) and Nick Wilson (6-0) , and SEU's Kobe Jaramillo (6-1) all have six wins to lead the league. Jaramillo has an LSC-best 75 strikeouts. UT Tyler's Rawley Hector (5-1) has the LSC's top ERA (2.34) over 50 innings of work. SEU's Parker Tennill has 10 saves to also lead the conference.
 
Two LSC single-game records have been broken this season as WT's Dylan Fesperman had 13 RBI on Feb. 28 and LCU's Brevin McCool hit four home runs on March 10. SEU junior outfielder Connor Cox tied an LSC record with four doubles in a game on March 30.
