CANYON, Texas – The #14 Lady Buffs continue Lone Star Conference action this weekend as they hit the road to take on UT Permian Basin on Friday night followed by a Saturday showdown with rival Angelo State at the Junell Center in San Angelo.
 
UT PERMIAN BASIN
UT Permian Basin enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-13 with a 6-4 mark in Lone Star Conference action. UTPB picked up a four-set win over the Lobos of Sul Ross State on Tuesday night in Alpine.
 
CJ Allard is in his second season at the helm of the UT Permian Basin volleyball program. 2024 saw the Falcons register a .640 winning percentage (16-9) which is the best in Odessa since 2019. He came to the Permian Basin following three seasons as an assistant at Northeastern University. He also has assistant coaching stops at Coastal Carolina and UNC-Greensboro.
 
Ashlee Macias leads the way offensively for the Falcons as the sophomore outside from El Paso has registered 180 kills on 462 swings with 61 attack errors for an attack percentage of .258 to go along with four assists, 13 aces, 120 digs and 10 total blocks to average 4.67 points per set.
 
A LOOK AT THE SERIES
Friday night is the 24th all-time meeting on the volleyball court between the Lady Buffs and Falcons as WT is a perfect 23-0 in the series that dates back to 2006. The Lady Buffs are 8-0 in games played at the Falcon Dome. Last year's meeting in Odessa saw Currie Marusak finish with 11 kills and a .455 attack percentage in a sweep by the Lady Buffs.
 
ANGELO STATE
The Belles enter the weekend with an overall record of 15-7 with a 9-2 mark in Lone Star Conference action as they ride a two-match win streak into a Friday matchup with Eastern New Mexico at the Junell Center. Angelo State registered a midweek sweep on the road on Tuesday night at Western New Mexico.
 
Chuck Waddington is now in his 18th season at the helm of the ASU volleyball program, holding an overall record of 425-147 during his time in San Angelo with 12 NCAA Tournament Trips including a South Central Regional Championship in 2016 and 2024. The four-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has led the Belles to 10 straight NCAA Tournaments while coaching 26 AVCA All-Americans.
 
Madi Parrish leads the way offensively for the Belles as the LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year has registered 259 kills on 702 swings with 90 attack errors for an attack percentage of .241 to go along with 13 assists, 27 aces, 190 digs and 22 blocks. The Saginaw, Texas native reached the 1,000 career kill plateau on Tuesday night at Western New Mexico.
 
A LOOK AT THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs and Belles renew one of the top rivalries in Division II volleyball on Saturday afternoon, marking the 97th all-time meeting in a series that dates back to 1980. WT is 66-30 against Angelo State. Earlier this season saw the two teams battle during the LSC Crossover in Canyon as the Lady Buffs claimed a straight-set victory.
 
WELCOME TO THE BOX
West Texas A&M is fortunate to have one of the best home environments in all of NCAA Volleyball. The WTAMU Fieldhouse is more affectionately known as "The Box," is home to 22 Lone Star Conference Championships, 16 Regional Titles and four NCAA Division II National Championships. 
 
The Box boasts one of the best home winning records in the NCAA on any level of competition. The Lady Buffs are 567-85 at The Box since the 1980 season for an incredible winning percentage of 86.7%. This season has seen the Lady Buffs go a perfect 13-0 inside of The Box with a 7-0 mark during LSC action in Canyon. The Lady Buffs have registered 14-unbeaten seasons at WTAMU Fieldhouse with the last coming in 2023 (18-0).
 
LSC PRESEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Senior middle blocker Taytum Stow was named the 2025 Lone Star Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year announced on Monday, August 25th. The Hereford product ed the league with 138 blocks (1.27 per set) on her way to a second LSC Defensive Player of the Year Award (also 2022). Stow was also third in the LSC with a .364 hitting percentage and earned honorable mention All-American status.
 
THE GAMBLE ERA
Three-time National Champion and NJCAA Hall of Famer Terry Gamble was named the 17th head coach in Lady Buff Volleyball history on February 4, 2025. Gamble has compiled a record of 1,107-349 (.759) as he was just the third head coach in NJCAA history to reach 1,000 career wins on October 15, 2024.
 
Gamble came to Canyon following seven seasons at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. Gamble was named the Regional Coach of the Year for the third time, leading Blinn College to their fifth straight NJCAA National Tournament. He was inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007 after winning three NJCAA volleyball championships (2000, 2004, 2006) and three NJCAA Coach of the Year awards.
 
LADY BUFFS IN THE AVCA POLL
The Lady Buffs sit 14th in the newest edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Monday afternoon. It marks the 325th time since 1986 that the Lady Buffs appear in the poll, the sixth most in Division II history. WT has sat atop of the poll 28 different times including twice during the 2023 campaign.
