SAN ANGELO, Texas – The West Texas A&M Lady Buff softball team used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the 23
rd-ranked Angelo State Rambelles, 7-3. The Lady Buffs improved to 10-0 overall and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play while the Rambelles fell to 9-4, 0-1 in league play.
Angelo State struck first, taking advantage of a leadoff walk from Ashlyn Lerma. Lerma stole second before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Rambelles brought in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Paxton Scheurer
The Lady Buffs tied the game in the top of the third after
Brittni Rufus hit an infield single to start the inning. Rufus advanced to second on a groundout before using her speed to steal third. On the stolen base attempt, Rufus reached third, but the throw went into left field to allow Rufus to score and level the score.
WT took the lead an inning later after
Diana Murtha started the inning with a single. After a walk, a pair of bunts by
Braeland Booth and
Julie Guzman gave the Lady Buffs the lead.
Gabie McConnell added to the run total on an infield single. While on the base, McConnell stole second, but the Rambelle throw found its way into center field, allowing to score Guzman. On the ensuing throw back into the infield, Angelo State suffered another error to allow McConnell to come around and score.
Kyra Lair recorded the win in the circle after pitching 6.2 innings while striking out five, walking four, and giving up one earned run. Lair came back into the game in the bottom of the seventh to record the final two outs.
