RICHARDSON, Texas – Torrey Miller and
Blair Moreland were honored by the Lone Star Conference as the duo and Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M were favored to finish first in the 2022 LSC Preseason Poll announced on Tuesday morning by the league's offices.
Miller was tabbed the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Moreland earned Preseason Setter of the Year honors. The poll is voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives from throughout the league.
The defending South Central Regional Champion WT picked up 21-of-44 possible first-place votes for a total of 707 points to land atop the preseason poll. Angelo State was selected second with 11 first-place votes (699) followed by UT Tyler (7 fpv, 680), Lubbock Christian (586) and DBU (3 fpv, 560) rounding out the top five.
UT Permian Basin (491) received two first place votes followed by St. Edward's (474), UAFS (460), St. Mary's (364), Texas A&M-Kingsville (363), Oklahoma Christian (334), Texas Woman's (283), Eastern New Mexico (222), Texas A&M International (188), Midwestern State (145), Western New Mexico (120) and Cameron (56).
Miller claimed First Team All-Conference and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors last season after leading the Lady Buffs to the program's 16
th LSC and 14
th regional titles. She led the conference with 455 kills on the season averaging 4.14 per set including a career-high 33 in the regional championship against No. 3 MSU Denver.
Moreland was named to the All-Freshman after registering 567 assists as a true freshman. She made appearances in 102 sets as one of the top setters in the conference in 2021, averaging 5.56 assists per set and recorded a season-high 33 against St. Mary's.
WT opens the 2022 season on Friday, August 26 at 11:30 a.m. in Canyon against Adams State at the annual BritKare Lady Buff Classic. The Lady Buffs will take on the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs later Friday night at 7 p.m. before facing St. Mary's and Northwest Missouri State on Saturday, August 27 to close the preseason tournament.
