#5 Buffs Take the Finale, Split the LSC Series with #19 LCU

CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M scored nine unanswered runs to close out a Lone Star Conference weekend series with a 12-4 victory over the #19 Lubbock Christian Chaps on Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park in Canyon.

The Chaps jumped out to an early lead with two outs in the first inning as a misplayed ball in the outfield scored the first run of the game followed by a Jarred Gibson two-run homerun down the right field line to make it 3-0. WT cut into the lead in the bottom of the first as Ryan Johnson doubled down the right field line to score Eddy Savoie.

The Buffs cut into the lead again in the second as Paul Wittmann singled to center field with two outs to drive in Will Fuenning, Eric Ortiz tied it up in the third as the junior doubled down the right field line with two outs to score Johnson and make it 3-3.

LCU retook the lead in the top of the fourth as Caden Hensley grounded out to second base to score Cayde Ward for the 4-3 advantage. The Buffs responded in the home half of the fifth as Adam Becker doubled to the warning track in left field with two outs to score Savoie.

WT took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth as Fuenning led off the frame with a solo homerun the other way to right field. LCU looked to answer in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out but Colton Charnholm got out of the frame with a pair of big strikeouts to keep it 5-4.

The Buffs added to their lead in the seventh as Kennedy Badgett scored on a misplayed ball in the outfield with no outs followed later in the frame by a Nollan Koon two-run double to the gap in left center, WT wasn't done yet as Wittmann singled up the middle to score Bryant Bailey for the 9-4 lead.

WT added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Bailey singled to right to score Ortiz followed by an Izaiah Madrid RBI single and another LCU error that extended the lead to 12-4.

Charmholm picked up the win (7-2) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his 3.2 innings of relief.

The Buffs hit the road next weekend for a four-game Lone Star Conference series against the #15 Angelo State Rams beginning on Friday night at Foster Field in San Angelo, Texas.
