CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Jack Eagan was dominant on Saturday night as the senior left-hander struck out 14 batters without allowing a hit in the nightcap to salvage a Lone Star Conference doubleheader split with the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas.
The Buffs look to split the LSC weekend series on Sunday afternoon as the finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Nolan Ryan Field.
GAME ONE
The Javelinas carried over their hot streak at the plate in the first inning as TAMUK sent 11 batters to the plate in the home half of the first inning highlighted by homeruns from Nick Wolff and Hayden Failes for a 6-0 lead. WT responded in the top of the second inning as
Kennedy Badgett doubled to the gap in left center with the bases loaded to score a pair and make it 6-2.
Kingsville added to their lead in the third as Kyler Bumstead grounded out to second to score Garrett Thompson for the 7-2 lead. WT cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as
Adam Becker doubled to left center to score Badgett and
Ryan Johnson followed by a pair of wild pitches to plate Becker to make it 7-5.
TAMUK added to their lead again in the home half of the fifth with a Wolff RBI single thru the right side followed by a Giancarlo Servin sac fly to left to score Shelby Becker for the 9-5 lead. WT answered with the long ball in the top of the sixth as Johnson connected on a two-run homerun to left center to score
Eddy Savoie and cut the lead to 9-7. The Javelinas added an insurance run in the sixth on a Becker single thru the left side.
Isaac Keehn picked up the loss (2-1) for the Buffs, allowing six earned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in his 0.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as Becker connected on his 14
th homerun of the year, a two-run shot to left field in the top of the first inning for the 2-0 advantage. WT added to their lead in the top of the third as
Will Fuenning made a heads-up baserunning move and scored from second on a flyout to the wall followed by a Johnson hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-0.
WT extended their lead in the top of the sixth as Fuenning connected on a two-run homerun to left field to score Becker for the 6-0 lead.
Eric Ortiz added to the lead in the seventh with an RBI single with the bases loaded and one out followed later in the frame by a TAMUK throwing error that plated Badgett for the 8-0 advantage.
Eagan becomes the first Buff to toss a no-no since Darin Cook's 10-strikeout performance against Adams State on February 9, 2009. Eagan finished the game with a career-high 14 strikeouts to go along with two walks on 119 pitches to move to 5-2 on the year.
