Fuenning Drives in Seven as the #5 Buffs Sweep Past Cameron

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Will Fuenning finished off a Lone Star Conference series sweep in style on Sunday afternoon as the junior drove in seven runs, leading the #5 Buffaloes to a 21-3 run-rule victory over the Cameron Aggies at Wilder Park in Canyon.

The Aggies got on the board in the top of the first inning as Beau Williams lifted a solo shot to right center field with two outs for the early 1-0 lead.

WT responded in the home half as Adam Becker lifted a sac fly to the wall in left with the bases loaded followed by a Will Fuenning RBI single and a Mike Manetta sac fly to give the Buffs a 3-1 lead. The Buffs extended their lead in the second as Fuenning doubled to left center to drive in two to make it 5-1.

The Buffs added to their lead in the third as Jacob Butler scored on a fielder's choice followed by a Ryan Johnson RBI single, a walk and a passed ball with the bases loaded scored two more followed by another Fuenning two-run double to make it 11-1.

The Aggies cut into the lead in the fourth as Nik Sanchez and Ryan Allen drove in RBI with base hits before Colton Charnholm settled in out of the pen with back-to-back outs as WT led 11-3. WT added to their lead in the fourth with a pair of wild pitches to score a run followed by an Aggie error to make it 13-3.

WT extended their lead again in the fifth as Eddy Savoie singled up the middle to plate Izaiah Madrid with two outs followed by a Kennedy Badgett two-run double. Adam Becker would single up the middle to plate Badgett followed by a Fuenning two-run blast to right center for the 19-3 lead. The Buffs added insurance runs in the sixth as Bryant Bailey singled up the middle to drive in two more and make it 21-3.

Charnholm picked up the win (1-0) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just two hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his 3.2 frames of scoreless relief.

The Buffs hit the road next weekend for Lone Star Conference action as they take on the UT Permian Basin Falcons in a four-game series starting on Friday night. The series will be played at Momentum Bank Ballpark, home of the Double-A affiliate for the Oakland Athletics, the Midland RockHounds.
