Johnson’s Cycle and Butler’s Walk Off Highlight a Saturday Sweep

CANYON, Texas – #5 West Texas A&M remained unbeaten on Saturday afternoon as the used a Ryan Johnson cycle in the opener followed by a Jacob Butler walk-off extra-inning base hit in the nightcap to clinch the Lone Star Conference series from the Cameron Aggies at Wilder Park in Canyon.
 
The Buffs will look for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon as they host the Aggies in the finale on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
 
GAME 1
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead as Kennedy Badgett doubled down the left field line with one out as Ryan Johnson scored all the way from first for the 1-0 lead. The Aggies tied up the game in the third as Julian Macias started the frame with a solo homerun to left. 
 
WT retook the lead in the home half of the third as Johnson doubled to the gap in left center to score Eddy Savoie followed by a wild pitch and an Adam Becker sac fly to the wall in left to give WT the 3-1 lead.
 
Johnson continued his big day at the plate in the flier with a two-run triple to right center followed by a wild pitch to score Johnson and make it 6-0. 
 
The Albuquerque product finished off the cycle in the fifth as he crushed a leadoff solo bomb to left field for the 7-0 lead. WT wasn't done in the frame as Will Fuenning doubled to left center to drive in two followed by a Mike Manetta RBI single to run the lead to 10-1.
 
Jack Eagan picked up the win (2-0) for the Buffs as the lefty allowed one earned run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in his four innings of work. Brennan Berdon tossed three scoreless frames with two strikeouts to close out the win. 
 
GAME 2
The Buffs used the long ball to jump out to an early lead in the nightcap as Badgett lifted a solo shot to left with two outs for the 1-0 advantage.
 
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as they took advantage of a Cameron error with two outs as Paul Wittmann tripled to right field to score Zach Kaminkow for the 2-0 lead.
 
The Aggies got on the board in the top of the sixth as Beau Williams lifted a solo shot to right center field that cut the lead to 2-1. WT added an insurance run in the sixth as Becker doubled down the right field line to score Badgett and make it 3-1.
 
Cameron wouldn't go down without a fight as a Ryan Allen solo homerun to right cut the lead to 3-2 and knocked Hoaglund from the game. The Aggies would tie it up later in the frame with an RBI fielder's choice groundout to make it 3-3.
 
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the eighth as Jordan Harrison-Dudley tripled to right field with one out followed later in the frame by a Nik Sanchez RBI single up the middle for the 4-3 lead. The Buffs were down to their last strike in the home half before Fuenning lifted a ground-rule double to right field that plated Becker followed by a Jacob Butler walk off RBI single to right as Fuenning beat the tag at the plate for the 5-4 win. 
 
A.G. Ayala picked up the victory (1-0) on the mound for WT, allowing one earned run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts over the final 0.2 innings.
