CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M made big defensive stops all night long as they handed the #2 Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce their first loss of the season on Thursday at the First United Bank Center, 82-72 during Lone Star Conference action. Thursday night marked the final regular season trip to the FUBC by the Lions as a Division II institution as they are now 6-61 all-time against the Lady Buffs including 4-28 in Canyon.

It marks the first top-five victory by the Lady Buffs since February 22, 2020 when they traveled to Commerce and topped the then #3 Lions (58-55). WT, who leads Division II basketball in total rebounds, have combined for 107 boards over the last two games with 26 of those coming on the offensive end of the floor tonight. TAMUC struggled from the floor in the fourth quarter, going just 3-of-19 (15.8%) including a field goal drought of 6:36.

Zamorye Roberts finished the night going 6-of-17 from the floor including 2-of-7 from deep as the junior led the way with 16 points to go along with six assists and three blocks.
Karley Motschenbacher impressed as the Moorhead, Minnesota native went 6-of-12 from the field for 15 points to go along with 13 rebounds for a double-double.Â

The Lady Buffs finished the night going 29-of-85 (34.1%) from the floor including 11-of-32 (34.4%) from behind the arc and 13-of-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line to go along with 57 rebounds (26 offensive, 31 defensive), 16 assists, 13 turnovers, 10 blocks and nine steals.Â

Dyani Robinson led the way for the Lions as the Cypress product went 10-of-20 from the floor including 2-of-2 from deep as she led all players with 22 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Commerce finished the game going 26-of-67 (38.8%) from the field including 3-of-8 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 19-of-30 (63.3%) from the stripe with 44 rebounds, six assists, 14 turnovers, four blocks and six steals.
