No. 5 Buffs Take Down No. 10 Mustangs En Route to 4-3 Victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – In their 56th-meeting, the No. 5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M handed the No. 10 Midwestern State Mustangs their first loss of the season on Wednesday night victory.

Despite the Mustangs 15-11 shot advantage, WT won 4-3 to advance to 5-0-0 for their best season start since 2013 while the Mustangs fall to 6-1-0.

Midwestern State struck first in the 4th-minute with a shot by James Doyle in the top corner of the net to take the 1-0 lead in the Top 10 matchup.

The Buffs leveled the score in the 14th-minute after Denis Herrera's shot was saved by Mustang's keeper Marc-Antoine Huzen but was rebounded to senior Stefan Andjelic who buried it in the net for his third goal of the season.

Giancarlo Saldana made the steal at midfield before finding Rotem Weiss in the pentalty area as the freshman slotted the ball out of the keeper's range to double the Buffs lead in the 20th-minute.

Just moments later, Saldana would add to the board with his seventh score of the season as the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week launched a strike from 45-yards out to make 3-1 at the half.

The Buffs added to their lead as Anthony Perea collected his first collegiate score with the deciding goal in the 62nd-minute while Saldana was credited with the assist.

The Mustangs brought the match within two in the 72nd-minute with a shot from Toi Yamaoka to make it 4-2. WT's keeper Tom Miles kept the Buffs lead as the freshman denied the penalty with a diving save before the ball was cleared.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, MSU netted its third score of the match to make it 4-3 but the Buffs defense held on to secure their fifth victory of the season.

Eight Buffs recorded shots, landing four on target with four players producing scores for WT.  Miles moved to 4-0-0 with a season-high four saves.

The Buffs will return to Canyon on Saturday as they host Lubbock Christian at The Pitch with kick off set for noon.
