GAME NOTES
CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M finishes off its three-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 19, when they host Southwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Pitch.
Sunday's non-conference contest will be broadcast on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network with Alex Kypfer on the call. Fans wanting to watch the game can purchase a 24-hour pass for $10 or a season pass for $50.
THE PITCH
The Lady Buffs improved to 2-0-0 on the season and 6-1-0 in the calendar year at The Pitch following an impressive 9-0 victory over Adams State on Sunday.
WT is 61-29-12 (.657) since the field was opened on Sept. 10, 2010. They have won eight straight at home against Division II competition dating back to Oct. 2019.
LADY BUFFS OFFENSE EXPLODES
Seven different Lady Buffs scored in their 9-0 victory over the Grizzlies of Adams State on Saturday at The Pitch.
Reagan Matacale opened the scoring with an Olimpico in the 3rd minute followed by the first of two goals from
Asha James in the 14th minute. Emily Avlia scored from a free kick for the second time this season in the 27th minute with
Hannah Kelley-Lusk adding another a minute later.
Jessica Diaz finished the scoring in the first half with a laser from distance in the 37th minute.
ASU came out with more energy in the second half
Maliyah Mendoza scored on a counter attack in the 60th minute. James would get her second five minutes with
Viviana Gomez scoring two in the final five minutes in her collegiate debut.
Reagan Heelan and
Daniela Estrada combined to make five saves as WT recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since October 2018.
A LOOK AT SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
Southwestern Oklahoma State enters Sunday's contest at 2-3-0 following a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday evening.
Brianna Benitez is the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with one goal and three assists. The sophomore from Irving had two assists in their season opener against Northeastern State. Juliana Rocha and Launa Torez are tied for the team lead in goals with two.
Ashley Hughes has started in four of the five games in goal for SWOSU. The freshman keeper from Australia has allowed six goals while making 28 saves for a .824 save percentage.
THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs are 16-1-1 all-time against SWOSU that dates back to Oct. 10, 1998. WT won the first 14 games of the series but have gone 2-1-1 since including a 6-0 defeat at the paws of the Bulldogs in 2017.
SCORING FIRST IS ESSENTIAL
With their win over ASU, WT improved to 58-3-4 (.923) since 2015 when scoring the first goal of the game. They also improved to 24-2-1 (.907) when Kelley-Lusk finds the back of the net.
HOME SWEET HOME
In their two home games this season, WT has outscored opponents 12-0 with seven of those goals coming in the second half. They are also averaging over 30 shots per game at The Pitch.
7,000 DOWN, MANY MORE TO GO
In the final minute of Saturday's victory,
Cheyenne Orozco became the first player in program history to
eclipse the 7,000-minute mark.
DIAZ DOING HER THING
With assists in consecutive games for the fourth time in her career, Diaz now ranks seventh on the all-time list with 17. She is two shy of tying of Lindsay McHorse for sixth and three away from becoming the sixth player in program history with 20 or more helpers.
GOT THAT LOVIN' HEELAN
Heelan was named the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week for a second time in her career on Monday after not allowing a goal over the weekend.
The Kearney, Neb. native made a career-high nine saves in the Lady Buffs 3-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday. She also made a pair of saves in the opening half in Sunday's win over ASU.
MIA A.K.A. THE SWISS ARMY KNIFE
Mendoza was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after doing it all for the Lady Buffs. Not only was the Dallas native part of a defense that didn't allow a goal but she also scored twice with an assist.
She has now scored 11 goals, the second-most on the team, with four assists in 53 career games.
WHAT A DEBUT
Gomez had quite the collegiate debut on Saturday as the Amarillo native scored twice on three shots in 14 minutes of action.
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs open LSC play on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at UT Permian Basin. WT is a perfect 19-0-0 all-time against the Falcons dating back to Aug. 30, 2006.
