RICHARDSON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Zada Swoopes continues to cement her legacy as one of the top throwers in the nation as she was named the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, the league announced on their website on Friday morning.
Swoopes, who was named the USTFCCCA Division II National Field Athlete of the Year on Wednesday, becomes the fourth Lady Buff to earn the honor and first since 2017. She scored the most points by anyone at last week's NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 23.
The Whitewright native had arguably one of the great outdoor seasons in conference history as she won the shot put and discus national titles. In the shot put, she is one of two throwers in NCAA DII history to throw over 17 meters two or more times in a season including her toss of 57-8.5 (17.59m) to break the championship record.
She became the second Lady Buff to win the discus with a toss of 175-6 (53.49m), four feet further than Azusa Pacific's Elle Alexander. She also broke her own school record in the event at the Masked Rider Open in Lubbock with a throw of 184-1 (56.10m).
Her sixth-place finish in the hammer throw with another school record effort, 186-5 (56.83m), saw her become the first Lady Buff to earn All-American honors in that event.
Swoopes season is not finished yet as she will compete in the shot put at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 18-27 in Eugene, Ore.
