CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M ran their win streak to 15 games on Friday night as
Matt Vanderburg picked up his 400
th win in Maroon & White in a 9-1 decision in the Lone Star Conference series opener at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The first two and a half inning were a pitcher's duel as advertised before the Buffs plated a pair of runs with two outs as
Keone Givens tripled to the gap in right center to score
Cade Engle followed by an
Abel Pena RBI single thru the left side to make it 2-0.
WT added to their lead in the fourth as
Will Fuenning tripled to the left center field power alley followed by a nine-pitch at-bat to
Kyle Moos that ended with an RBI double down the left field line, the Buffs weren't don't yet as Engle singled to right center to knock ASU ace Trent Baker from the game followed by a Givens sac fly to center to make it 5-0.
The Rams got on the board in the top of the sixth as Josh Elvir singled thru the right side with two outs to score Thomas Cain before
Mathieu Gauthier stranded a runner at second with a grounder to Givens at 6-1. WT responded with three runs in the home half as Pena singled up the middle with the bases loaded followed by a wild pitch to score Givens and make it 9-1.
Gauthier was dominant on the mound as the senior allowed just one unearned run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in his eight innings to move to 8-2 on the season.
Noah Bartlett tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the 9-1 victory.
