LAREDO, Texas – The #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M remained atop of the Lone Star Conference standings on Sunday afternoon as they finished off a weekend sweep of the Texas A&M International Dustdevils, 9-4 at Jorge Haynes Field in Laredo.
The Buffs wasted no time getting on the board as
Cade Engle led off the game with a double to center field followed by a
Jonah Gonzales sacrifice bunt and an International throwing error to plate Engle.
WT added to their lead in the third as Gonzales doubled down the left field line with one out to score Engle and make it 2-0. The Dustdevils got on the board in the home half of the third as Brock Hargens singled to right with two outs to plate Phillip Sanchez and cut the lead to 2-1.
The Buffs responded in the fourth as
Justin Martinez was hit by a pitch to start the frame followed by a
Will Fuenning single and a
Kyle Moos walk to load the bases with no outs,
Justin Robinson would single up the middle to score Martinez followed by a fielder's choice RBI by Engle and a Gonzales single up the middle to run the lead to 5-1.
The Dustdevils cut into the lead in the home half of the frame as Isaac Gonzalez doubled to center to score Ronnie Bailey followed by a Daniel Quito's sac fly to make it 5-3. WT would respond in the fifth with a Moos sacrifice fly to center to plate Martinez with one out to run the lead to 6-3.
TAMIU cut into the lead again in the fifth as Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs to knock
Zach Dixon from the game,
Chris Rodriguez entered from the WT bullpen and forced a fly out to center to strand the bases loaded at 6-4.
The Buffs added to their lead in the top of the eighth as Robinson singled to right center with one out to score Moos. WT added insurance runs in the ninth as Moos singled to right to score
Ryan Johnson with one out followed by a Madrid RBI fielder's choice to make it 9-4.
Rodriguez picked up the win (5-0) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of relief.
The Buffs return to Wilder Park next weekend for their final Lone Star Conference regular season series of the year as they host the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas beginning on Friday night with first pitch set for 7 p.m. in Canyon.
