CANYON, Texas – The #22 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M started slow but found their rhythm offensively, scoring 30 runs on a cold day at Wilder Park to sweep a Lone Star Conference doubleheader from the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds.
The series finale scheduled for Friday afternoon has been postponed due to cold temperatures in the Texas Panhandle.
GAME 1
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead with three runs on four hits in the opening frame with RBI from Nick Shifftner and Andres Quintana for the 3-0 lead. WT responded in the home half as
Cade Engle scored from third on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and no outs but Eastern would strand the bases loaded and lead 3-1.
ENMU looked to add to their lead in the second with a leadoff double to knock
Zach Dixon from the game,
Carter Brown entered from the bullpen and closed the door to strand a runner at third to keep it at 3-1. WT cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame as
Jonah Gonzales grounded out to short to score
Justin Robinson and make it 3-2.
WT took the lead in the third as
Ryan Johnson tripled to left with two outs followed one pitch later by a
Kyle Moos RBI single thru the left side at 3-3. A pair of Hound errors with the bases loaded led to four more run as WT took a 7-3 lead to the fourth.
The Buffs added to their lead in the fourth as Johnson tripped home
Will Fuenning followed by a sac fly to center by Moos to make it 9-3. WT connected on their first long ball of the year in the fifth as
Eric Ortiz crushed a three-run bomb to center followed later in the frame by a Moos RBI ground-rule double to make it 13-3.
Brown picked up the win for the Buffs as the senior allowed no runs in just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of relief.
GAME 2
The Buffs got on the board early in the nightcap as
Cade Engle scored from third on an errand pickoff attempt with no outs followed later in the inning by a
Kennedy Badgett double to the gap in left center to drive in a pair of make it 3-0. WT wasn't done yet as they took advantage of another ENMU error to score two more and run the lead to 5-0.
WT loaded the bases again in the second as Johnson singled to center to score
Abel Pena followed by a Badgett RBI walk and a pair of RBI groundouts and an Engle two-run double to right to make it 11-0. Fuenning added to the lead in the third with an RBI triple to left to score Pena at 12-0.
The Buffs continued to score in the fourth as Pena singled to right to score
Kason Haggard followed by a
Zach Kaminkow two-run double to left to make it 15-0. WT took advantage of another Hounds error in the fifth for two more runs to run the lead to 17-0.
Mathieu Gauthier picked up the win (1-1) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in his five inning of shutout work.
