Azamati named EMY Africa Man of the Year

CANYON, Texas – The list of accolades for West Texas A&M's Benjamin Azamati continues to grow as the Olympic sprinter was named the EMY Africa Man of the Year last weekend.

The 6th annual EMY Africa Awards were held on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The award's focus this year was to push the narrative that everyone is capable of greatness.

Azamati represented Ghana at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo where he ran the second leg on the 4x100-meter relay that qualified for the final ahead of the United States of America. He also competed in the 100-meter dash running 10.13, just 0.1 seconds away from qualifying for the semifinal.

He had one of the best seasons of any NCAA Division II sprinter in history as he broke the 100m and 200-meter record along with winning three individual national titles. He won the 100m and 200m titles along with anchoring the 4x100m relay to a runner-up finish at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships as the Buffs finished a program-best second. He was also named the Lone Star Conference Athlete of the Year after sweeping both sprint titles in record fashion.

He broke the Ghana and NCAA DII record in his first 100m race as a Buff running a wind legal 9.97 at the Texas Relays in Austin. He would go on to run under 10.10 four more times during the outdoor season. His record-breaking run in the 200m came at the LSC Championships in Canyon with a time of 20.13.

Azamati also won the 60-meter dash at the NCAA DII Indoor Championships giving Matt Stewart and the Buffs their first individual national title on the track.
