Fast Start Propels the #15 Buffs Past St. Mary’s in the Opener, 6-3

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The #15 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M plated three runs in the first two frames and never looked back as Mathieu Gauthier picked up his first victory in a 6-3 decision over the St. Mary's Rattlers in Lone Star Conference action at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio, Texas to open up a four-game series.
 
The Buffs and Rattlers continue their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with a pair of seven-inning contests starting at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.

RECAP:
The Buffs got on the board first in the opening frame as they took advantage of an errant Rattlers throw with two outs as Keone Givens scored from third base for the 1-0 advantage. Tanner Schuetz doubled down the left field line with one out in the second followed by another St. Mary's error to turn over the lineup as Givens singled to right center to make it 2-0, Cade Engle fouled out to right field to plate Izaiah Madrid to make it 3-0.
 
The Rattlers plated their first run in the home half of the third inning as Jake Mares singled to right center with one out to plate Ryan McGowen to cut the lead to 3-1. WT responded in the top of the fourth as Darius Carter doubled to the wall in left field to score Engle at 4-1.
 
WT added to their lead in the top of the seventh as Schuetz singled to center field with the bases loaded and two outs to score Clay Koelzer and Reese Patterson to make it 6-1. The Rattlers wouldn't go down without a fight as Keaton Milford doubled down the right field line with two outs to drive in a pair and cut the lead to 6-3.
 
Gauthier picked up the win (1-1) on the mound for the Buffs as the senior right hander allowed just one earned run on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Chandler Dean tossed the last two frames for the Buffs as the senior allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
