New Orleans, La. – West Texas A&M's
Florance Uwajeneza was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Women's National Athlete of the Week. She became the first runner in WT's program history to earn the honors.
"[Uwajeneza] finally got an opportunity to show results of the work she has put in since we started working together in April," said head coach
Jake Krolick. "I'm very excited to see her have the opportunity to run against some of the best competition in D2 next weekend in Lubbock. I really believe she can run with the best."
The Minnesota product set a new program record at the Lone Star Conference Championships as she covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 20 minutes, 50.60 seconds to claim the individual title. Uwajeneza is only the fourth Lady Buff to win the individual title, joining Brenda Sindet,
Emma Love and
Nikolina Hrelec and only the second to be named the LSC Newcomer of the Year. She recorded the largest win margin of victory in LSC Championship history when she defeated Dallas Baptist's Madison Brown by one minute and 24 seconds.
Uwajaneza and WT return to Lubbock on Saturday, Nov. 14, to compete in the D2 National Invite.
