Kale Steed Wins Kirk Hill Award Sports Writer of the Year for Fourth Time

MCKINNEY, Texas – Kale Steed was once again honored for his coverage of West Texas A&M Athletics as the Canadian, Texas native was named the 2019 Kirk Hill Award winner as the top sports writer in the conference, announced during the LSC Football Media Day on Monday afternoon in McKinney, Texas.

Steed claimed the Kirk Hill Award as the league's top sportswriter for the second straight year and fourth time overall, while Angelo State's Jeremy Bryant was recognized with the Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year for the sixth time.

The awards, which distinguish those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC's member institutions.  The Kirk Hill Award for Sportswriter of the Year is named in honor of the late Kirk Hill of the Houston Post who won the first award in 1963.  The Jake Trussell Award for Broadcaster of the Year is in memory of the late Jake Trussell of Kingsville who broadcasted contests for Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Steed, who was honored for the fourth time in the last five years, once again showed why he is one of the best sports writers in the State of Texas as he provided supporters of the Buffs and Lady Buffs an inside look into West Texas A&M athletics for the Amarillo Globe-News. Steed not only wrote recaps and previews but took the time to write features about several student-athletes. Additionally, he put together a weekly show with WT Radio Broadcaster Lucas Kinsey called "Buff Talk" which covered a variety of topics involving WT athletics.

As the longtime voice of Angelo State, Bryant, who was recognized for the fourth time in the last five years and sixth time overall, provides a wealth of knowledge during all Ram and Rambelle broadcasts.  His level of preparation for each game exceeds just the statistics, with player profiles, behind the scenes stories and notable achievements.  Bryant, who also hosts a sports talk show, has built an expansive listener base over 18 years of calling games and his voice is aligned with the ASU Athletics brand.  In addition to broadcasting duties, Bryant holds a sales position with Foster Communications in San Angelo, Texas.
