Dixon’s Gem Salvages a Series Split with #11 Angelo State at Wilder Park

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M junior Zach Dixon tossed eight scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon as the #15 Buffs salvaged a weekend Lone Star Conference series split with the #11 Angelo State Rams in front of almost 200 fans at Wilder Park.
 
The Buffs hit the road for Lone Star Conference action next weekend as they take on the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico in a four-game series starting on Friday night at 8 p.m. CT at Greyhound Field.

RECAP:
The Buffs jumped on the board early as Keone Givens and Tanner Schuetz reached with no outs followed by a Clay Koelzer RBI single to right center for the early 1-0 lead, WT added to their lead in the home half of the fourth inning as Kyle Kaufman lifted a solo shot down the left field line to make it 2-0.
 
Zach Dixon registered one of his best outings in Maroon & White as the junior lefty went the first four and two third innings without allowing a hit before Jacob Finke singled to left field with two outs, Finke would steal second two pitches later followed by a walk before a lineout ended the inning with WT leading 2-0. The Buffs extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Givens scored from third on a double play ball.
 
The Rams threatened in the top of the sixth as two reached with one out before Dixon forced a pair of flyouts to end the inning, WT added to their lead in the eighth as Koelzer grounded out to short to score Givens and run the lead to 4-0.
 
Dixon was stellar on the mound as the Las Vegas native (4-0) picked up the win, allowing no runs on just two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in his eight innings of work. Dominic Yearego closed out the game for the Buffs with three strikeouts in the final frame.
