Cook and Mesecher Roll as the #6 Buffs Sweep a Saturday Twinbill

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M used a pair of strong pitching performances and 25 combined hits to roll past the visiting Aggies of Cameron twice on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas as the Buffs reach the 20-win plateau in just their 23rdoverall game to become the fastest team in program history to reach the mark.
 
The Buffs and Aggies wrap-up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at Wilder Park with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. in Canyon.

GAME ONE RECAP:
The Buffs started off the scoring in the home half of the first inning as Clay Koelzer lifted a sac fly to deep center with one out as Keone Givens tagged up to score to make it 1-0. WT added to their lead in the second as Tag Baxter reached on a leadoff single before Christian Loya sat on a fastball and crushed a two-run shot to left to run the lead to 3-0, Justice Nakagawa doubled off the left field wall with two outs followed by a balk before Givens singled up the middle to make it 4-0.
 
WT added to their lead in the third as Kyle Kaufman lift a solo shot to left center with two outs for his fifth round-tripper of the season to make it 5-0. Givens added two more RBI in the fourth with a single thru the left side with one out at 7-0. The Aggies registered their first two hits of the afternoon to start the fifth followed by a sac bunt and an RBI groundout by Erik Ohman before Darin Cook ended his afternoon with his seventh strikeout.
 
Mitchell Miller entered from the pen for the sixth as the lefty allowed a one-out triple to left before a pair of strikeouts stranded the Aggie at third to keep it 7-1, Chandler Dean finished off the game for the Buffs as the junior from Bowie allowed two runs on two hits before a strikeout ended the game, 7-3.
 
Cook picked up the win (4-0) for the Buffs, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in his five innings of work.
 
GAME TWO RECAP:
WT took the lead in the second during the nightcap as Givens singled to left center with two outs to score Darius Carter and make it 1-0. The Buffs added insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as Kaufman led off the frame with a triple down the left field line followed by a Baxter single up the middle to run the lead to 2-0, Darius Carter drove in Cade Engle with an RBI single at 3-0.
 
Drew Mesecher gave way to Dominic Yearego with two on and one out in the top of the sixth as the senior exited with just three hits allowed on the afternoon, Yearego forced a grounder and a lineout to center to end the threat. The Buffs added three runs in the home half of the sixth as Kaufman singled to left to drive in another RBI followed by an Engle two-run single up the middle to make it 6-0.
 
Mesecher picked up the win (4-1) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just two hits with one walk and four strikeouts while Yearego closed the game for his 18thcareer save, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts over the final 1.2 innings of play.
