#10 Buffs Host Adams State in a Four Game Regional Series at Wilder Park

CANYON, Texas –
The #10 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M open up their 2019 home schedule this weekend as they host the Adams State Grizzlies in a four-game South Central Regional series at Wilder Park in Canyon starting on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
 
ADAMS STATE
The Cowboys are guided by seventh year head coach Jim Capra who holds an overall record of 83-216 during his time in Alamosa. The Grizzlies enter the weekend with an overall record of 0-3 following a sweep at the hands of Colorado State-Pueblo this past weekend in Pueblo.
 
Senior infielder Jared Gay leads the way offensively for the Grizzlies, hitting .583 last weekend with a triple and four RBI for a slugging percentage of .750. Daniel Brennen leads the way on the mound as the senior started Game 3 in Pueblo for the Grizzlies last weekend, registering an ERA of 4.15 with six strikeouts in his 4.1 innings of work.
 
NATIONAL COLLEGE BASEBALL WRITERS PRESEASON TOP-25 POLL
The defending Lone Star Conference Champion Buffaloes of West Texas A&M will begin the 2019 season ranked tied for 10th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Preseason Top-25 Poll as senior Joe Corbett earned All-American accolades announced on Tuesday afternoon.
 
2018 National Champion Augustana picked up 12 of the possible 19 first place votes to sit atop of the poll with 461 points followed by Tampa (six first place, 459), Columbus State (432), UC San Diego (398), Florida Southern (379), Texas A&M-Kingsville (367), Southern New Hampshire (347), North Greenville (331), Millersville (302), West Texas A&M (275) and Bellarmine (275) to round out the top ten.
 
WT HEAD COACH MATT VANDERBURG
Matt Vanderburg has built West Texas A&M Baseball into a regional and national contender as the Norman, Oklahoma native enters his 11th season at the helm of the Buffs. He holds an overall record of 321-205 (.610) during his decade in Canyon while registering a career record of 420-272 (.607) in his 13 seasons in collegiate baseball.
 
THE COACHING STAFF
Cory Hall enters his ninth year at West Texas A&M as the Buffs' Pitching Coach, serving the last three as the program's Associate Head Coach. Hall has had three different pitchers drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time in Canyon with multiple other professional players learning under one of the top pitching minds in collegiate baseball. Assistants Shawn Neale and Trace Hansen enter their third season in the dugout for the Buffs.

LOCAL TALENT STAYING HOME
The Buffs have made it a point to recruit local talent as they currently have 11 student-athletes that graduated high school within a 100-mile radius of campus. The local players are: Braden Baker (Canyon), Cade Engle (Pampa), Kix Ferrel (Memphis), Caleb Flores (Amarillo), Clay Koelzer (Amarillo), Christian Loya (Amarillo), Mason Mays (Amarillo), Reese Patterson (Canyon), Jake Pederson (Randall), Blake Perdue (Tascosa) and Chris Rodriguez (Friona).
 
COLLEGE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
West Texas A&M senior right-hander Joe Corbett has been named a Division II Preseason All-American by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Buffs were ranked 18th in the country by the publication in their annual Preseason Poll.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
West Texas A&M senior Joe Corbett was named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year while the Buffs were picked atop of the annual LSC Baseball Preseason Poll announced on Thursday afternoon by the league's offices in Richardson, Texas.
 
The defending LSC Champions picked up 10 of the possible 18 first place votes for a total of 117 points followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (six first place, 106), Angelo State (two first place, 94), Tarleton (76), Eastern New Mexico (51), Cameron (34) and UT Permian Basin (26). Corbett joins Brooks Trujillo (2016) as the only Buffs to be named the league's Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
