CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M hit a NCAA Division II single game record 10 home runs in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Western New Mexico as they swept the three-game series over the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at Schaeffer Park. The Lady Buffs become the first Division II school to hit double digit home runs in a single game breaking their own record set back on April 10, 2015 against Eastern New Mexico.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 19, for a midweek matchup at Lubbock Christian before making the trip to San Angelo for a three-game series against No. 6 Angelo State.Â
THE BASICS

After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first on a two-run double from WNMU's Alicia Habitzreuther, WT responded with four runs on back-to-back-to-back home runs. Shayne Starkey had a leadoff triple down the right field line followed by two consecutive outs until Kylee Moore connected on her second home run of the series to tie the game at 2-all. Ruby Salzman was due up next and hit a laser offer the fence in the left center followed by Miranda Grotenhuis' first career home run to deep center.
Western New Mexico tied the game in top of the second with on a Tycee Coplan single to third before advancing to third on a throwing error. Coplan would come around to score on Ariana Maldonado's single to left field. The Lady Buffs took control of the game in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of home runs to make it 9-4. Alyx Cordell led the inning off with a walk followed by a double to left center by Starkey to put runners on third and second with no outs. Kourtney Coveney with clear the bases with one swing of the bat. Salzman would follow that up with her second home run of the game three batters with a two-run shot to center field.
The Lady Buffs would add to their lead in the bottom of the third with Coveney's second three-run home run of the game. Cordell singled up the middle with one out followed by a walk by Starkey before Coveney sent the ball deep over the fence in left center to make it 12-4. WT would score nine runs in the bottom of the fourth on four home runs giving them 10 in the game breaking the previous NCAA Division II record for most home runs in a single game. Grotenhuis and Brittany Cruz homered in consecutive at-bats to open the inning before Kinzie Jones and Starkey walked to put two runners with one out. Brittney Gonzalez connected on her first home run taking the 2-1 offering to opposite field for a three-run home run to tie the NCAA single game record. The record would fall with the next pitch of the game as Moore homered to left field for the second time of the game for the Lady Buffs 10thhome run of the contest.Â
Starkey (3-1) allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 3 innings of work. Coveney pitched 2 innings in relief not only a run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.Â

WT wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom half of the first inning with four runs, three coming from a home run from Moore. Starkey and Coveney led off with walks before Salzman singled to left to score Starkey. Moore was up next and hit her fourth home run of the series with another opposite shot to left field. They would double their advantage in the bottom of the second after Erica Vessels led off with a double to left before coming around to score on Cordell's double to right. Following the first out of the inning, Coveney singled through the left side to set up Salzman's three-run shot to left field to make it 8-0.
The Mustangs showed some life in the top of the third with two runs as Maldonad0 and Habitzreuther had RBI singles. WT would put three more runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning as Shanna McBroom had a lead-off triple before scoring on a passed ball. Vesels followed that with a walk advancing to third on Cordell's second double in as many innings before Starkey cleared the bases with her second triple of the game to make it 11-3.
It would be 14-3 by the end of the fourth inning after Marcela Mejia drove in McBroom for her first career RBI after the junior opened the inning with a triple. Mejia would come around to score two batters later on Starkey's third and final triple of the contest. India Holland would also pick up an RBI with a pinch hit single to left.
Kyra Lair (5-0) continued the strong start to her collegiate going 3 innings allowing three runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Starkey pitched two innings in relief holding WNMU to one hit while striking out two.
