No. 6 Buffs Post 6-3 Victory Sunday for School-Record 38th Win

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #6 West Texas A&M 6, Angelo State 3

  • The Lead: The No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team closed the 2018 regular season with a 6-3 win at Angelo State to take three of four from the Rams in the series, while winning a school-record 38th game this season. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • It was the Rams who took the early lead, plating two runs in the bottom of the third as Parker Bramlett singled up the middle, to begin the frame.Following an error, a walk and the second out, Brad Mathiowetz singled home a run as did Nick Novak for a 2-0 lead.
  • Just like in the previous games, the middle frames were good to the Buffs as WT plated three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.
  • In the fourth, senior Nick Canas began the inning with a single and a walk to senior Luis Amaro, followed by a RBI single to left from senior Brandon Marrero for a 2-1 score.
  • A walk loaded the bases and sophomore Darius Carter singled through the left side, plating Amaro for a 2-2 score.Marrero scored on a wild pitch for a 3-2 lead.
  • Canas began the fifth with a triple to right center followed by a RBI single from Amaro and, in the sixth, the Buffs used a hit batsman to senior Bodie Bryan and a RBI single up the middle from senior Jimmy Cubillos for a 5-2 score.
  • WT then added a run in the eighth as junior Justice Nakagawa began the frame with a single and moved to third on a Bryan double.Cubillos hit a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead.
  • ASU used a RBI double with two out as the Buffs made a great play at home gunning Jacob Boston down at the dish allowing just the one run.
  • WT junior Braden Baker closed the door on the Rams in the ninth for the 3-1 series win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The 38th win of the season surpasses the mark of 37 set in 2014 (37-21) and this year marks the most regular season wins in school history.
  • The 20 conference wins marks the fourth time of 20 or more league wins in a season and the first since winning 20 or more from 2014-2016.
  • The win Sunday marked the first regular season series win in San Angelo in program history as the Buffs had never won more than two games in a four-game series in San Angelo.
  • WT wins the season series 5-3 with the 2-2 split in the non-conference in Canyon earlier in the year.
  • For the game, the Buffs had six runs on ten hits with one error, while leaving 12 on base, while ASU had three runs on eight hits with no errors and stranded eight.
  • Canas was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and a triple, while Marrero was 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Junior Drew Mesecher (2-0) went seven innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, walked two and fanned six.Baker pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, walked three and fanned one.
  • Trent Baker (4-4) took the loss for ASU, going four innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, walked four and fanned two.
  • Boston was the lone Ram with two hits, going 2 for 3.
