THE BASICS:

  • Score: No. 6 West Texas A&M 1, Texas A&M-Kingsville 2 (10 Innings)

  • Records: West Texas A&M 40-14, Texas A&M-Kingsville 39-15

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)

  • The Lead: Behind a pair of outstanding and career pitching performances, the No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team dropped a 2-1, 10-inning, elimination game Saturday to Texas A&M-Kingsville in the NCAA South Central Regional as the Buffs finish the season at 40-14.  WT starter Ryan Larison went the distance, while TAMUK freshman hurler Tyler Flores went nine innings as both pitchers combined for 288 pitches.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a three-up-three-down top of the first with the Buffs playing as the visiting team, TAMUK put two on with two out in the bottom of the first as, on an 1-2 count, senior Ryan Larison rung up his second of the frame to get out of the jam unscathed.
  • A great defensive play by the Buffs in the second inning as Austin Ingraham hit a fly ball to left with a man at third and senior Jimmy Cubillos fired a laser to the plate gunning Brad Jones down at the plate to end the frame.
  • The Javelinas put two on once again in the bottom of the third with one out and Levi Zents hit a double to right, but the Buffs made another out at the plate as Manny Loredo was gunned down 942 with TAMUK scoring just one run in the frame.
  • Cubillos hit a bleeder to center for the first hit of the game for the Buffs in the top of the fourth with nobody out.An error on Tyler Flores, the TAMUK pitcher on a comebacker fielder's choice to second put runners at the corners for the Buffs with one out and a hit batsman loaded the bases.Senior Brandon Marrero hit a sacrifice fly for a RBI and a 1-1 score as the Buffs were unable to do any further damage in the inning.
  • WT put two on with one out in the top of the fifth, but Flores came up with a big strikeout and a fly out as the Buffs stranded two more and five for the game.
  • After a strenuous first three innings for Larison, he settled down and retired ten-straight heading into the seventh inning.
  • Christian Caudle began the bottom of the seventh with single to center, but Larison ended the frame with his seventh strikeout of the game preserving the tie game.
  • WT put the potential go ahead run at second with a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt from Cubillos in the top of the eighth and senior Nick Canas got plunked with a pitch for the fifth hit batsman by Flores in the game.Flores came back with a big strikeout for the second out and got a ground ball out to end the inning as WT left two more on base and seven in the game.
  • Larison retired the Javelinas in the bottom of the eighth for his longest outing of his WT career.
  • The Buffs put the go ahead run on first with one out in the top of the ninth on a single through the left side by freshman Tommy Williams.Junior Justice Nakagawa singled down the left field line for two on with two out in the top of the ninth. On a 3-2 count, senior Bodie Bryan drew a walk to load the bases, but Flores, on his 145th pitch, came up with his 12th strikeout of the game as the Buffs left the bags full.
  • Larison came out to pitch the bottom of the ninth, retiring the Javelinas in order in the frame sending the game to extra-innings.It marked the second-straight game the Javelinas have played in extras as they lost last night to Colorado School of Mines 9-7 in 11 innings.
  • With 3,4,5 due up for the Buffs in the tenth against new pitcher Seth Hubert, Canas began the frame with a single up the middle, but foul out and fly out followed and Canas was thrown out trying to steal second for the third out.
  • Larison retired the first two of the tenth and Ingraham singled up the middle for the winning run at first. The Buffs made a move to the bullpen in favor of junior Dominic Yearego after Larison pitched 143 pitches and got a standing ovation from the WT crowd.
  • On the first pitch from Yearego, Ingraham stole second as the throw went wide of second as Ingraham moved to third and the throw to third went high scoring Ingraham for the game winner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • For the game, the wind switched directions in the night and was blowing in, instead of out limiting the chances for both teams as the Buffs tallied one run on five hits with two errors on the final play.
  • Five different Buffs each had a hit with Cubillos scoring a run and Marrero driving in the lone score.
  • Flores went nine innings, allowing four hits, one unearned run, while walking one and fanning 12 as he didn't factor into the decision.
  • Hubert took the win in relief, going one inning, allowing one hit.
  • Despite the loss, the Buffs accomplished a ton this season as they hosted their first NCAA South Central Regional in program history, while winning a school-record 40 games, won their first Lone Star Conference regular season title and hosted the LSC Championship for the second time.
  • Head coach Matt Vanderburg won his 300th game at WT this season, while winning his 400th overall, while the Buffs earned LSC Coaching Staff of the Year and Vanderburg was named NABC South Central Region Coach of the Year.
